Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Island Unlocks, Daily Checklist & Happiness
Every building unlock threshold, the optimal order to trigger them, and a 12-minute daily checklist that keeps the happiness meter climbing.
Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). Unlock thresholds and coin values match the v1.0.2 patch notes.
Living the Dream has 28 unlockable buildings. Most are gated by a single “happiness” metric that fills as your Miis interact with each other, complete wishes, and trigger mini-events. This guide explains exactly what unlocks when, the order you should aim for, and a daily 12-minute routine that keeps the meter climbing at the fastest sustainable rate.
The single most important thing to understand about the happiness meter: it has a soft cap. Once a Mii’s individual happiness hits 100, further increases slow to 1/4 the usual rate. So the strategy is to spread happiness evenly across all your Miis, not to max out a single favorite.
Unlock thresholds (in order)
The game’s progress is gated by the island happiness average (mean of all individual Mii happiness scores). Below are the buildings gated by this metric.
| Threshold | Building | Function |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | Apartment Tower (B) | 4 extra resident slots |
| 40 | Park | Outdoor activities, toys |
| 50 | Convenience Store | Rotating food/clothing inventory |
| 55 | Café | Restaurant mini-game, date venue |
| 60 | Photo Studio | Snapshot storage, daily pose-game |
| 65 | Clothing Boutique | High-end outfits |
| 70 | Interior Shop | Furniture unlocks |
| 75 | Travel Agency | Island trip mechanic |
| 80 | Stylist Salon | Haircut / makeup changes |
| 85 | Concert Hall | Music performances |
| 90 | Tower Suite | Top-floor penthouse apartment |
| 95 | Observatory | Star-gazing event |
| 100 | Wedding Chapel | Marriage ceremonies |
Several other buildings unlock by other triggers, not by happiness meter:
- Creative Workshop unlocks after the 6th resident arrives.
- Treasure Vault unlocks after the 8th treasure artifact is found.
- Hot Spring unlocks after the 12th wish event completes.
- Beach House unlocks after the 16th resident arrives.
The optimal first-week build order
If you’re playing through the first week and want to maximize efficiency, this is the order to chase:
- Day 1 — Get 4 starter Miis settled. Pull happiness to ~50 by fulfilling their wishes. (Unlocks Park, Convenience Store, Café.)
- Day 2 — Create 2 more Miis (total 6). Build the Photo Studio. (Unlocks Creative Workshop.)
- Day 3 — Fulfill at least 5 wish events. (Unlocks Hot Spring as a side-effect.)
- Day 4 — Pull happiness to ~70. Build the Interior Shop and Travel Agency.
- Day 5 — First island trip unlocks at 75 happiness. Pick a 4-hour trip for 200 coins of bonus income.
- Day 6 — Create 4 more Miis (total 10). (Unlocks 4 new resident slots.)
- Day 7 — Pull happiness to ~85. Stylist Salon and Concert Hall unlock together.
By the end of day 7, you should have 13 of the 28 buildings unlocked and a happiness average around 88. This puts you about 35% through the game’s total content, in real-time terms.
The 12-minute daily checklist
Once your island is set up, you only need about 12 minutes of active play per in-game day to keep momentum. Here’s the routine:
Minutes 0–3: Open wishes, fulfill cheap ones
Tap each Mii’s head. If they show a wish icon, check what it is. Wishes fall into three categories:
- Easy wishes (chat, food item, compliment) — 1–2 minutes each, 50–200 coin reward
- Medium wishes (give specific gift, location visit) — 5–8 minutes, 300–500 coin reward
- Hard wishes (find rare item, complete mini-quest) — 15+ minutes, 500–1000 coin reward
Spend the first 3 minutes doing all easy wishes. Skip hard wishes unless they fit your schedule.
Minutes 3–7: Run the Park, Café, and Photo Studio mini-games
Three mini-games give reliable income:
- Park — obstacle course, 80–120 coins for 90 seconds
- Café — serving customers, 100–150 coins for 3 minutes
- Photo Studio — pose-matching, 100 coins per correct guess (no time limit, so do this one carefully)
That’s roughly 280–370 coins in 4 minutes. Do them in this order, hardest first, while your focus is highest.
Minutes 7–10: Buy at the rotating Plaza Shop
Open the Plaza Shop and check the daily rotation. Two things to buy first:
- Any new food item (especially if it’s your Miis’ preferred food category)
- Any new clothing item in the top 3 rarities (gold / pink / rainbow drop)
Don’t bother buying low-rarity items — they’ll cycle back next rotation.
Minutes 10–12: Check wish events and end the day
Tap every Mii once more. If a new wish has appeared, decide whether to fulfill it now or save for tomorrow. End the in-game day (or just close the game — the day rolls over automatically at midnight in-game).
The player character has a 24-hour "Energy" timer. After ~6 hours of real-time play, you can no longer trigger wish events. Don't waste energy on cosmetic tasks — save it for the next day's wish run.
Common issues and fixes
”Happiness meter is stuck at 80”
You probably have one Mii whose happiness is significantly lower than the rest. Open the relationship screen, find the lowest-scoring Mii, and do a wish event just for them. The meter responds fastest to closing individual gaps.
”I unlocked the Photo Studio but the pose game is impossible”
The pose game matches a target pose by selecting from 6 buttons. The trick is to identify the limb configuration first (standing, sitting, arms-raised), then narrow by the facial expression. Random clicking takes 3–4 minutes per round; systematic narrowing takes 90 seconds.
”Travel Agency wants 800 coins for a trip — too expensive”
Don’t take the trip on day 1. The Travel Agency has a “free preview” trip every 7 in-game days. Wait for that.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I rebuild a demolished building? A: Yes, but you pay 1.5× the original cost. Demolish rarely — only when repositioning for layout reasons.
Q: Do I need all 28 buildings? A: No. The game has 6 “ending conditions” that don’t require all buildings. You can finish the main story with 18 buildings unlocked.
Q: Can I see other players’ islands? A: No, in v1.0.2 there’s no island-visiting multiplayer. The only online feature is the asynchronous “Wish a Friend” postcard system.
Q: Does the happiness meter decay? A: Yes, slowly. -0.5 per in-game day on average. The 12-minute daily checklist above offsets the decay with a net +2 per day, which is sustainable indefinitely.
