Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Mii Creation: Personality, Pronouns, Family

Every Mii setting explained: what personality archetypes actually do, why pronouns matter for romance, and which family-relation fields affect gameplay.

Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). All Mii settings here refer to the in-game Mii Maker → Edit menus.

Living the Dream’s Mii Maker is deceptively deep. The first screen you see has 30+ sliders and 12 dropdowns, and most new players tap “Randomize” until they get something acceptable. That’s a mistake — half the sliders affect gameplay, not just appearance. This guide walks you through every setting that actually changes how a Mii behaves on the island, and which ones are cosmetic-only.

We split the guide into three blocks: identity settings (pronouns, family relations, birthday), personality settings (archetype, hobby, walking style, talking style, food preferences), and appearance settings (face paint, makeup, body type, voice). The first two blocks affect gameplay. The third is mostly cosmetic, with one exception — voice pitch, which influences romance compatibility.

Identity settings (high gameplay impact)

Pronouns

Pronouns are free-form text in Living the Dream. You can type any set: he/him, she/her, they/them, custom neopronouns, or even just a name. The game uses pronouns in:

  • Scripted cutscenes (“Alex asked them to the park”).
  • Romance dialogue branches (some responses are gendered).
  • Wish event text (“They wish for a sweet treat”).

There is no mechanical bonus to any pronoun set — they’re purely roleplay. But setting them is not optional: if you leave pronouns blank, the Mii gets randomly assigned pronouns at romance time, which often conflicts with how the player envisions the character.

Family relations

The Mii Maker has a “Family Relations” tab where you can mark any Mii as a sibling, parent, child, cousin, or grandparent of any other Mii. This is the single most important non-obvious setting in the game.

Why it matters:

  • Miis marked as siblings cannot enter romance with each other. The game checks this before friendship builds, so you don’t get the awkward “they’re flirting but they’re related” situation.
  • Miis marked as parent/child have a small happiness bonus when in adjacent apartments.
  • Miis marked as cousins can romance each other (the game considers this one degree removed, which matches most real-world cultures).
Relationship tab

Setting family relations *after* Mii creation requires a separate "Edit Relations" menu in the Town Hall. It's easier to set them at creation time, when the prompt naturally appears.

Birthday

Birthday is purely cosmetic — it only affects which date a Mii celebrates their birthday event. Two Miis with birthdays 6 months apart will both have a small celebration once per in-game year.

The reason it matters at creation time: if you set a birthday on the same day as another Mii, the game runs a joint birthday event that gives 1.5× the usual rewards. Coordinate with your friend group if you’re optimizing.

Personality settings (medium gameplay impact)

Personality archetype

There are 16 personality archetypes in Living the Dream, grouped into 4 broad families:

FamilyArchetypesRomance preference
ConfidentCharismatic, Bold, Cool, AloofConfident or Energetic
EasygoingLaid-back, Gentle, Warm, QuietEasygoing or Independent
IndependentReserved, Mysterious, Thoughtful, StoicIndependent or Easygoing
EnergeticPeppy, Cheerful, Loud, DramaticEnergetic or Confident

The “Romance preference” column is a strong hint, not a hard rule. A Confident Mii can romance an Easygoing Mii, but the friendship meter grows 30% slower and romance events fire 40% less often.

For a relaxed playthrough, pick one Mii from each of the 4 families — this gives you variety without forcing you to optimize compatibility.

Hobby

There are 36 hobbies grouped into 8 categories (sports, music, food, fashion, games, travel, reading, outdoors). Hobby affects:

  • Wish event probability. A Mii with hobby=Music will frequently wish for instruments or concert tickets.
  • Compatibility bonus. Two Miis with hobbies in the same category gain friendship faster.

It does not affect which jobs they can take, which is a separate system.

Walking style

Walking style is purely cosmetic. It affects how the Mii moves between buildings. There are 12 styles (Normal, Happy, Sashay, Shuffle, etc.).

One subtle effect: Miis with the same walking style are more likely to become friends. The game treats it as a low-strength “shared trait” signal.

Talking style

Talking style is also mostly cosmetic, but it has one gameplay effect: Miis with a higher “energy” talking style are 10% more likely to trigger wish events. This means Peppy, Loud, and Dramatic styles slightly improve your income.

Food preferences

Food preferences are a hidden stat (not shown in the Mii Maker UI). The game derives them from a combination of personality archetype and the avatar’s apparent age/weight — a young-looking Mii will get “childish food” preferences regardless of archetype.

There is no way to manually set food preferences. If you need a Mii to like a specific food for a quest, you have to feed them that food type several times in a row and the game will sometimes adjust the preference.

Appearance settings (mostly cosmetic)

Face paint and makeup

These are pure cosmetics. They have no gameplay effect. The one exception is the Mole slider, which acts as a fingerprint for the relationship engine — Miis without a mole have a slightly higher chance of romance compatibility (the game treats moles as “identifying features” and a no-mole Mii is more “neutral”).

Body type

Body type (slim, average, heavy) is purely cosmetic. It does not affect stamina, which is a separate hidden stat that affects how many actions per day a Mii can take.

Voice

Voice is split into two settings: voice type (8 options, ranging from “Young Boy” to “Elder Woman”) and pitch (high / normal / low). The voice type affects nothing. The pitch affects romance compatibility:

  • Two Miis with matching pitch gain romance faster.
  • Two Miis with opposite pitch (one high, one low) have the fastest romance unlock.

This is the only appearance setting with gameplay impact.

Common issues and fixes

”My Mii keeps getting assigned the wrong pronoun in dialogue”

Check the Pronoun field in Mii Maker — most likely it’s set to a custom value the game’s text engine doesn’t recognize. Stick to common English pronouns (he/she/they) or single-character symbols if you’re using neopronouns.

”Two Miis I want to romance keep getting blocked”

Open the Family Relations editor in Town Hall. The game treats “childhood friend” and “cousin” as romance-compatible by default, but if you’ve accidentally marked them as “sibling”, romance is blocked silently.

”The personality archetype doesn’t seem to affect anything”

It does, but the effects are subtle. The fastest way to verify is to check the in-game Compatibility Meter on the relationship screen — the meter shows up as a percentage, and matching archetypes raise it by ~15%.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I edit a Mii’s personality archetype after creation? A: Yes, but it costs 500 coins per edit. The Town Hall editor lets you change archetype, hobby, walking style, and talking style — but not family relations, pronouns, or birthday (those are locked).

Q: How many Miis can I create in total? A: 100. There’s a hard cap per island. After 100 residents, the Mii Maker becomes locked. Plan accordingly for long-running playthroughs.

Q: Can I import a Mii from my Switch profile? A: Yes. The Mii Maker has an “Import from System” option that pulls any Mii stored on the Switch’s profile. This is the fastest way to populate the island with friends and family.

Q: Do NPC Miis (the four recurring characters) have personalities? A: No. NPC Miis are scripted personalities and don’t follow the same archetype system as player-created Miis.
