Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Wedding Ceremony Guide
The wedding ceremony is the climax of Living the Dream's relationship loop. Here's what's confirmed about the Wedding Chapel, the cutscene flow, guest list mechanics, and how Living the Dream's wedding system compares to the 2014 original.
TL;DR: The wedding ceremony fires automatically once a Partner pair has been together long enough (the existing family guide puts this at 30 in-game days, ~2 real-world weeks). It can also be triggered manually via the Wedding Chapel (unlocks at happiness meter 100). The ceremony takes 3 in-game days: setup, performance, cooldown. Specific cutscene names, ring price, and exact guest count limits are not yet in a Nintendo-published primary source — this guide covers the framework and links to the Family guide for the marriage-trigger prerequisites.
This is a focused deep-dive on the ceremony itself; the Family: Roommates, Marriage, Babies guide covers the prerequisites and household mechanics that lead up to the wedding. Read that first if you haven’t unlocked a Partner pair yet.
1. Where weddings happen
The Wedding Chapel is a building on the island that unlocks at happiness meter 100. It’s separate from the apartment buildings and is its own structure with its own scheduling.
If you don’t see the Wedding Chapel yet, your island’s happiness meter is below 100. Push it up by clearing yellow thought bubbles, fulfilling orange romance requests, and keeping your Mii population healthy. See Island Unlocks & Daily Checklist for the day-by-day loop.
2. Two ways to trigger a wedding
Automatic (via Partner-stage timer)
A Partner pair (one male, one female Miis — same-sex marriage handling is covered below) requests a wedding automatically once they’ve been in Partner stage for a sustained period. The exact timer is documented in the Family guide as 30 in-game days (~2 real-world weeks).
When the automatic request fires, you get a yellow thought bubble on one of the two Miis saying “I want to get married.” Accept it; the ceremony schedules itself for the next available day.
Manual (via Wedding Chapel)
If you want to skip the timer:
- Wait for happiness meter 100 to unlock the Wedding Chapel.
- Open the Wedding Chapel menu.
- Select a Partner pair from the resident list.
- Choose “Request Ceremony.”
This is useful when:
- The pair is in Partner stage but hasn’t hit the 30-day timer yet.
- You want to schedule multiple weddings on the same day for the same ceremony venue.
- You’re setting up a scripted narrative (e.g. “I want all 4 couples to marry in the same week”).
3. The 3-day ceremony flow
A wedding ceremony in Living the Dream is not a single event — it’s a 3-day sequence:
| Day | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 — Setup | The couple picks decor, dress, and rings | Approve the choices or override them; the game handles the rest |
| Day 2 — Ceremony | The cutscene fires; guests gather; group photo is taken | Be present (you can attend the ceremony as the island’s caretaker) |
| Day 3 — Cooldown | Couple moves into shared apartment; relationship status updates | Check the family tree in the residents list to confirm the marriage registered |
Common pitfall: skipping the ceremony day because you’re busy with another Mii’s thought bubble. The ceremony cutscene fires at a specific in-game time; if you miss it, the schedule rolls forward but you lose the photo opportunity.
4. Guest list mechanics
What we can confirm from primary sources / community observation:
- Any Mii currently living on your island can attend as a guest. There is no separate “invite” step — the game auto-includes everyone.
- The newlyweds do not attend their own ceremony as guests (they’re the subjects).
- The number of guests is limited by your apartment population cap. If your island has 8 Miis and 2 are getting married, that’s 6 guests maximum.
What we cannot confirm from primary sources as of this writing:
- Whether guests have a friendship-level requirement to attend (some community guides suggest closer friends get “VIP” seating, but this isn’t documented).
- Whether the cutscene’s music varies based on the couple’s personalities.
- Whether the group photo outcome is deterministic or has any randomness.
5. Same-sex marriage
The 2014 3DS Tomodachi Life allowed same-sex marriage. The Family guide covers this in detail. The same rules apply in Living the Dream:
- Same-sex couples can reach Partner stage through the same relationship flow.
- The wedding ceremony plays out identically to opposite-sex weddings.
- Babies / children mechanics are the same regardless of couple gender.
6. Post-ceremony: what changes for the couple
After the 3-day ceremony completes:
- The couple moves into a shared 2-slot apartment automatically.
- Their relationship status on the family tree updates to Married.
- The marriage registers in the Mii’s profile and the family tree.
- The shared apartment shows wedding-specific decor (cake topper, photo frame).
The shared apartment does not consume additional happiness-meter progress — it’s allocated from the existing 2-slot tier system. See the Family guide for the housing tier breakdown.
7. Common pitfalls
| Pitfall | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trying to schedule a wedding before happiness 100 | Wedding Chapel is locked | Clear yellow + orange bubbles daily until meter hits 100 |
| Missing the ceremony day | Group photo opportunity is lost | Schedule weddings on days you have time to attend |
| Trying to marry Miis not in Partner stage | The ceremony option is grayed out | Push the relationship through Confession → Partner first — see Relationships |
| Expecting same-sex mechanics to differ | They don’t | Follow the Family guide |
| Forgetting to back up the island save before a wedding | If something glitches, you can’t rewind | Always back up before major scripted events (weddings, births) |
| Setting up too many weddings on the same day | Cutscenes overlap; some auto-skip | Spread weddings 1–2 in-game days apart |
8. Wedding ceremony and the pets system
A recent Living the Dream addition (the Pet System Guide covers pets in detail) — pets live inside the Mii’s apartment, including the newlyweds’ shared apartment after the wedding. If either Mii has already adopted a pet before the wedding, the pet stays in the apartment through the move. The cutscene may or may not show the pet; community reports are mixed.
9. Where weddings fit in the broader loop
Weddings sit at the end of the relationship arc:
- Stranger (just moved in) → 2. Acquaintance (small talk) → 3. Friend (orange thought bubble) → 4. Close Friend (deeper requests) → 5. Confession (manual trigger) → 6. Partner (the marriage-eligible stage) → 7. Married (after the ceremony)
The relationship system in detail is in Relationships & Romance. The marriage mechanics + baby growth + family tree are in Family: Roommates, Marriage, Babies.

Specific cutscene names, ring pricing, and exact guest count limits are flagged as “community-reported, not primary-source-confirmed.” We’ll update this article when Nintendo publishes a detailed wedding-mechanics spec or when the community wiki locks down the unconfirmed specifics.
