FFXIV Dawntrail Jobs Tier List: Pictomancer, Viper, and the 7.55 Meta

The Dawntrail meta explained: which jobs are best for new players, which jobs dominate Savage raid groups, and how the new Pictomancer, Viper, and Warrior of Light fit into the tier list. Includes the 7.55 Occult Crescent: North Horn (Phantom Jobs), Hildibrand series finale, Switch 2 client launch (2026-08-04) plus the 8/13-14 emergency maintenance. Patch 7.55 current in Aug 2026, updated 2026-08-31.

Freshness Patch 7.55 current (2026-07-28 release; second half of Dawntrail). Occult Crescent: North Horn + Phantom Jobs, Hildibrand series finale, Allied Society Quests, Yo-kai Watch crossover event (2026-08-04 to 2026-10-05), FF5 crossover cosmetics, PvP Series 11 ranked ladder (ends 2026-09-08). Switch 2 client launched 2026-08-04 with 8/13-14 emergency maintenance. 7.56 expected early October 2026; 8.0 'Evercold' announced for early 2027.

TL;DR: The Dawntrail meta is diverse — almost every job is viable in Savage. Pictomancer is the best DPS for new players, Viper is the most fun melee, Warrior of Light is the most unique tank. The old reliable picks (Sage healer, Monk melee, Black Mage caster) all still work. The “best” job is the one you enjoy playing 200+ hours. Patch 7.55 added Phantom Jobs (Occult Crescent: North Horn), the Hildibrand series finale, FF5 cosmetics, and the Switch 2 client launch on 2026-08-04 (with an 8/13-14 emergency maintenance for Crystalline Conflict + Switch 2 revive lag).

Who this guide is for

  • You reached Dawntrail and need to pick a main job
  • You are returning from a long break and want to know the new jobs
  • You are joining a Savage raid group and need to know what’s expected
  • You are not yet thinking about Ultimate progression

This is the second guide in our zero-to-endgame FFXIV series.

1. The new Dawntrail jobs (level 91–100)

Three new jobs launched with Dawntrail. Each is fun, each has a clear identity.

Pictomancer (DPS, Magical Ranged)

  • Concept: a painter who summons creatures from canvas to fight
  • Rotation: alternates between creature motifs (Pom, Wing, Maw, Claw, Hammer) and landscape motifs to buff the creatures
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐ (very forgiving)
  • Best for: new players, players who like casters, players who want the most unique visuals in the game
  • Weakness: medium mobility (long cast times)

Viper (DPS, Melee)

  • Concept: a dual-blade fighter with Hunters’ Stance (DPS stance) and Swiftscaled Stance (more mobile)
  • Rotation: chains Reawaken (the big burst window) with Vicewinder combos
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐ (medium)
  • Best for: melee players who want fast combat and mobility
  • Weakness: positionals matter, and the Reawaken window requires timing

Warrior of Light (Tank)

  • Concept: a sword-and-board tank themed around the Warrior of Light from FF1
  • Rotation: uses Light moves (sword-and-board) and Dark moves (shield-bash combos) interchangeably
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐ (medium)
  • Best for: tank players who want a flexible, thematic kit
  • Weakness: the Light/Dark balance is fiddly at first

Common pitfall: writing off Warrior of Light because “it sounds lore-focused.” It’s mechanically one of the most versatile tanks in Dawntrail. It’s a real job, not a gimmick.

2. The full Dawntrail tier list (Patch 7.51)

The meta is diverse — almost every job is viable. Tier lists are about how much easier one job is than another, not “you can’t play X.”

Tanks

RankJobWhy
SWarrior of LightVersatile, good damage, strong utility
SDark KnightMP-management kit is strong in Dawntrail
APaladinSolid throughout, magic-sword combos
AWarriorEasy to play, slightly lower damage ceiling
AGunbreakerCartridge system is fun, mid-tier damage

Healers

RankJobWhy
SSageBarrier healer, mobile, great damage
AWhite MageSimple, durable, slightly lower damage
AScholarPet management, classic FF14 healer
BAstrologianCard-based, busy, high skill ceiling

Melee DPS

RankJobWhy
SMonkRiddle of Fire window is still the best melee burst
SViperNew mobility, strong DPS
ASamuraiThree-sen simple, solid damage
ADragoonPositional jumps, strong AoE
AReaperShroud gauge, satisfying
BNinjaMudra system, complex, high ceiling but high floor

Magical Ranged DPS

RankJobWhy
SPictomancerNew, strong damage, easy rotation
ABlack MageHigh damage, turret-style, mobile fights are painful
ARed MageDual-cast, mobile, simple
ASummonerDemi-summons, simple rotation

Physical Ranged DPS

RankJobWhy
ABardSongs + DoTs, simple, solid
AMachinistHeat gauge, easy
ADancerPartner buff, mobile, simple

3. Best job for each type of player

You are…Play…Why
New to FFXIVPictomancerEasiest rotation, most fun visuals
Coming back from a long breakViperNew and exciting, no legacy build to relearn
Want to tank for the first timeWarriorSelf-heal, very forgiving
Returning tankWarrior of LightNew, fresh kit
Want a healer that’s easyWhite MageClassic healer, very forgiving
Want a healer with depthSageBarrier mechanics, more engaging
Want the strongest meleeMonkStill the king of melee in 7.51
Want the most fun meleeViperFast, mobile, satisfying Reawaken window
Want the strongest casterPictomancerBest magical DPS right now
Want the highest skill ceilingNinjaMudra system rewards mastery
Want the easiest gameplay overallWarrior or PictomancerBoth have 2-button filler rotations
Want to play with friends in 2026Whatever you wantAll jobs are viable in Normal Raids

Common pitfall: picking a job because a streamer said it was S-tier. Play what you enjoy. An A-tier job you love beats an S-tier job you hate.

4. The role distribution in a raid group

A standard 8-player Savage group has 2 tanks, 2 healers, 4 DPS. The DPS split is usually 2 melee + 2 ranged (one of each ranged type).

CompositionWhen
2 melee + 2 ranged (1 phys + 1 mag)Standard meta
3 melee + 1 rangedMelee-favored groups, niche
4 rangedGroup with no melee mains, low damage ceiling

The raid utility each job brings

JobUnique raid utility
PictomancerStar Prism — party-wide damage buff
SageKerachole — party-wide heal + damage reduction
BardBattle Voice — party-wide damage buff
DancerDevilment + Technical Finish — burst window party damage buff
MonkBrotherhood — party-wide damage buff
NinjaTrick Attack — boss damage taken debuff (mandatory in some groups)

Common pitfall: joining a raid group as a DPS with no utility. Every DPS job has a unique buff or debuff. Use it on cooldown.

5. The biggest Dawntrail job changes vs Endwalker

If you are returning from Endwalker, here’s what changed:

JobChange in Dawntrail
SummonerCompletely reworked — no longer summons Ifrit/Titan/Garuda separately, uses demi-summons instead
SageSlightly toned down, still meta
MonkNew Lunar/Lunar Nadi system — more depth
MachinistHeat gauge rebalanced
Black MageParadox spell added, rotation simplified
DragoonLife of the Dragon extended, more rotations
ScholarPet rework, fairy AI simplified

Jobs that didn’t change much

  • White Mage — almost identical to Endwalker
  • Warrior — same self-heal kit
  • Paladin — same magic-sword burst

Common pitfall: trying to play Endwalker rotations in Dawntrail. Read the updated skill descriptions. Many jobs had their combo order or gauge logic changed.

6. The “fun factor” ranking (purely subjective)

This is not the meta, but how much players enjoy each job in casual content.

RankJobWhy it’s fun
1PictomancerPainting creatures to fight is unique and satisfying
2ViperDual-stance melee with the Reawaken burst
3ReaperShroud gauge fills up, you go into Enshroud, big damage
4SageBarrier healing feels responsive
5MonkRiddle of Fire rotation is satisfying
6DancerPartner buff feels supportive
7BardSongs + DoTs are chill
8Black MageBig numbers, turret gameplay
9MachinistHeat gauge is simple
10White MageClassic healer comfort
11WarriorUnkillable tank
12PaladinSword-and-board classic
13Dark KnightMP-management tank
14GunbreakerCartridge combo
15SummonerDemi-summon animations
16DragoonJumps feel great
17Red MageDual-cast mobility
18ScholarPet AI is annoying
19SamuraiThree-sen is satisfying
20Warrior of LightLore-heavy, strong mechanically
21NinjaMudra system is complex

Common pitfall: chasing the “best” job instead of the “fun” job. FFXIV is a 200-hour journey. Pick something you’ll enjoy at hour 199.

7. Frequently asked questions

Q: Will I be rejected from raid groups for playing X? A: In casual content, no. In Savage progression, Ninja is the most-required, Black Mage is the most-rejected (turret issues), everything else is fine.

Q: Can I switch jobs later? A: Yes, free, instant. You only need to level the new job.

Q: Should I level all jobs on one character? A: Eventually yes, for the Achievement rewards. For now, level one job to 100, then experiment.

Q: Are any jobs “weak” right now? A: No. The Dawntrail balance is the most even in FFXIV history.

Q: What’s the best job for Ultimate (Dancing Mad)? A: Monk and Ninja are the most common picks. Pictomancer and Sage are also meta.

8. Next steps

You now have a complete picture of the Dawntrail job meta. The natural next read is Endgame Loop: Raid, Savage, Ultimate, and Variant/Criterion Dungeons — once you pick a job, you need to know what to do at level 100.

If you want to learn the underlying combat system, see Core Mechanics: GCDs, oGCDs, and the Job Gauge.

Version note (2026-07-18, updated 2026-08-16): Based on FFXIV Patch 7.55 (released 2026-07-28) running on Dawntrail’s second half. The job tier list above still reflects 7.51-7.55 consensus (no major job rebalancing in 7.55); the §8 7.55 content update below covers the new Allied Society Quests, The Occult Cresce, the Yo-kai Watch crossover event, and PvP Series 11 ladder. Patch 7.56 expected early October 2026; 8.0 “Evercold” announced for early 2027.

8. 7.55 Dawntrail second-half content update (Aug 2026)

Patch 7.55 released 2026-07-28 — the second half of Dawntrail. The job tier list above is unchanged by 7.55 (no major job rebalancing), but the patch added four pieces of content every Dawntrail player should know about.

8.1 New Allied Society Quests

7.55 added a final tier of Allied Society Quests that unlock cosmetics, glamour prisms, and a small amount of gil. The quests are solo content; you can run them in any order.

  • Duration: 4-6 hours total across all three societies
  • Reward: exclusive cosmetic weapon + housing item
  • Prerequisite: complete the existing Allied Society questline from 7.1
  • Best for: players who finished the main 7.x MSQ and want closure on the Dawntrail storyline before 7.56

8.2 The Occult Cresce — new field operations area

The Occult Cresce is a new field operations zone (open-world content, not a dungeon) added in 7.55. It is the largest open-world area Dawntrail has added and the spiritual successor to Bozja from Endwalker.

ActivityTypeDurationReward
Fate trainsOpen-world FATEs (level-synced)30-60 min per chainNuts, gil, Silver Fox
Critical encountersMini-boss spawns every 15 min5-10 min per encounterGold-musketeer’s spoils
Field note gatheringScavenger hunt1-2 hours totalOrchestrion roll
Daily hunt markSingle elite mob per day10-15 minCenturio Seals

The area is level-synced — bring any job you want. Most players run it on Sage (easiest to keep the party alive during fate trains) or Pictomancer (highest DPS for critical encounters).

8.3 Yo-kai Watch crossover event (2026-08-04 to 2026-10-05)

Square Enix ran a Yo-kai Watch crossover in 7.55 from 2026-08-04 to 2026-10-05. It is a limited-time event with cosmetic rewards gated to the duration.

Quest stepRewardNotes
Step 1 — meet Jibanyan in LimsaJibanyan-inspired minionSolo
Step 2 — gather 3 medals across EorzeaMedal glamourSolo, takes 1-2 hours
Step 3 — defeat event boss (Normal)MountSolo, level-synced
Step 4 (optional) — defeat event boss (Extreme)Weapon glow + title8-player, harder than normal
Repeatable — daily Yo-kai Wheel minigameNuts + gilDaily, 5 min

The Extreme-version boss (Step 4) is the only one that requires a group — Normal is soloable by any 100 with 7.55 gear. Run all four steps before 2026-10-05; rewards are gone after the event ends.

8.4 PvP Series 11 ranked ladder (ends 2026-09-08)

7.55 launched PvP Series 11 for the Feast / Rival Wings ranked ladder. Series 11 ends 2026-09-08 — about 3 weeks left to climb.

  • Top rewards: Series 11 title + exclusive PvP glamour set at top 1000
  • Current meta jobs (7.55 PvP balance): Sage (best healer), Monk (best melee burst), Black Mage (best caster burst), Warrior of Light (best tank)
  • Series 11 ladder is the last before 7.56 — expect a meta shift when 7.56 launches

8.5 Occult Crescent: North Horn + Phantom Jobs (the big 7.55 addition)

The headline addition in 7.55 is Occult Crescent: North Horn, the second sub-zone of the Occult Crescent field-operations area added with 7.55. North Horn introduces the Phantom Jobs system: every job in the game becomes a “phantom” you can slot into a separate progression track, independent of your main class. Think of it as a second job HUD that runs in parallel with your main job’s quest line.

Phantom Job slotHow it worksBest in slot
Phantom ViperDual-blade combo like Viper, but with reduced Stance-switch cooldownDPS-heavy solo runs
Phantom PictomancerCreature motifs, lower cast times than main PictomancerCasual solo clears
Phantom SageBarrier healer, lower MP costSustained solo content
Phantom Warrior of LightSwords + bashes, lower burst windowTanky solo runs

You unlock the system by completing the North Horn entry quest from the Occult Crescent quartermaster in Tuliyolal. The North Horn zone has its own FATEs, mini-bosses, and weekly objectives. The Phantom Jobs unlock as you spend Echo currency (dropped exclusively in the Occult Crescent) on the new Phantom Job vendor.

Practical impact for the tier list (does 7.55 change anything?): no. Phantom Jobs are side content, not a rebalance to the main job trees. Your main job’s level 100 rotation still works the same. Phantom Jobs give you a way to play other combat styles in casual content without levelling them — useful for catching up on MSQ or doing FATEs without min-maxing.

8.6 Hildibrand series finale (two questline chains)

7.55 wraps the Hildibrand questline that has run since 2.x (Endwalker opener in this arc was 6.x). The 7.55 finale is split into two parallel questline chains:

ChainPrerequisiteReward
Hildibrand: Unending JourneyComplete the existing 7.1 Hildibrand arcHildibrand weapon glow + orchestrion roll
Allied Society Quests: EpilogueComplete all three 7.1 Allied Society questlinesHousing item + glamour prism stack

Both chains are solo content with no combat difficulty gates — they are story-driven and PVE-free. Total time across both chains is 8-12 hours, depending on how many cutscenes you watch. If you are 7.x MSQ-complete and want closure on the Dawntrail storyline before 7.56 lands, run both chains before early October.

8.7 FF5 crossover cosmetics (limited window)

Square Enix re-upped its Final Fantasy V collaboration for 7.55, with glamour and orchestrion rolls themed around the FF5 jobs (Berserker, Samurai, White Mage, Black Mage, Time Mage). The cosmetics run until 7.56 (early October), with no specific end date — Square Enix has not published an exact cutoff. The crossover does not add new combat; it is purely cosmetic.

If you skipped the FF5 cosmetics event the first time around (it ran in 5.x in 2024), this is your last chance until the next FF crossover. The Berserker helm and the Samurai greaves are the most popular picks.

8.8 Switch 2 client launch (2026-08-04) + 8/13-14 emergency maintenance

The FFXIV Switch 2 client launched on 2026-08-04, alongside the Yo-kai Watch event. The Switch 2 version is the full Dawntrail experience including Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail expansions. It is sold through the Nintendo eShop, with subscription managed via NSO rather than Square Enix directly.

Three days after launch, Square Enix pushed an emergency maintenance on 2026-08-13 → 8/14 to address:

IssueFix
Crystalline Conflict matchmaking bug: certain team compositions got stuck in an infinite queuePatch (matchmaking logic)
「In the Shadow of the Tower」 main scenario quest — soft lock on the final cutscene on Switch 2Cutscene resolution patch
Switch 2 revive lag — revive actions took 2-3 seconds longer than they should have on Switch 2Performance patch
Aura / race colour — Au Ra (dragon race) horns would incorrectly desaturate after glamour change on Switch 2Glamour render fix

The 8/13-14 maintenance was extended into early Saturday morning UTC. If you started FFXIV on Switch 2 between 8/4 and 8/13, install the Switch 2 client update (it auto-downloads) before doing Crystalline Conflict or the final 「In the Shadow of the Tower」 cutscene. The other two fixes are non-blocking but you’ll notice the colour desaturation if you play an Au Ra.

Cross-save between Switch 2 and PC/PS5/Xbox: not supported. Your Switch 2 character lives on a Square Enix account separate from your cross-platform character and cannot be transferred to PC. If you already play on PC and want to use the Switch 2 hardware as a second device, treat it as a separate account.

8.9 7.56 → 8.0 “Evercold” forward outlook

PatchWindowWhat’s new
7.552026-07-28 (current)Allied Society Quests, The Occult Cresce, Yo-kai Watch event
7.56early October 2026 (expected)Final Dawntrail patch; Savage raid finale + cosmetic mount
8.0 “Evercold”early 2027 (announced)Next expansion; new jobs + new regions + level cap raise to 110

Practical recommendation for August 2026 players: do the Yo-kai Watch event before 2026-10-05 (it’s gone after), finish The Occult Cresce achievements for the Orchestrion roll, climb PvP Series 11 ladder if you want the title (deadline 2026-09-08), and don’t worry about chasing 7.56 or 8.0 job tier changes yet — those will land after Dawntrail ends.

Updated 2026-08-16 with 7.55 Dawntrail second-half content update. The §1-§7 job tier list is unchanged (no job rebalancing in 7.55). For the next guide in this series, see the Savage / Ultimate progression writeup (we will publish it once 7.56 raid details are live).
