Steam Deck: Complete First-Time Setup, SteamOS Tuning & Per-Game Performance (2026)
The definitive first-day guide for your Steam Deck (LCD or OLED) — initial SteamOS setup, the settings to change before you play, per-game TDP and frame caps, battery tuning, microSD strategy, Proton and compatibility, plus desktop mode and the tweaks we wish we'd known on day one.
The Steam Deck — Valve’s PC gaming handheld running SteamOS, a custom Arch-based Linux build. The OLED model (shown) refined the original 2022 LCD with a better screen, longer battery, and lighter chassis.
The Steam Deck is still the handheld with the best software experience in 2026. It is not the most powerful — the ROG Ally X20 and Legion Go 2 have more raw horsepower — but SteamOS, Proton, and Valve’s per-game verification make it the one that “just works” most of the time.
This guide is what we wish existed on day one. It is written for two audiences in one document:
- If you just unboxed your Steam Deck, follow sections 1–6 in order. Total time: ~30 minutes. Your Deck will be updated, tuned for battery life, and ready to play the moment your first game finishes downloading.
- If you already have one and want to squeeze out more battery and frames, jump to section 5 (per-game performance), section 7 (battery tuning), and section 9 (desktop mode).
Tested on SteamOS 3.6 (stable channel), a Steam Deck OLED 1 TB, and a Samsung microSD 512 GB (UHS-I). Most of this applies identically to the LCD model — where it differs, we call it out. Re-test specific numbers after a major SteamOS update.

Both use the same custom AMD APU (Zen 2 ×4 + RDNA 2, 8 CUs) at the same performance level. The OLED is a quality-of-life upgrade, not a performance upgrade — games run at the same frame rates on both.
1. Unboxing: what to do in the first 10 minutes
What’s in the box:
- Steam Deck (LCD or OLED)
- USB-C power adapter (45 W)
- Carrying case (OLED ships with a case that has a removable liner)
- Quick-start guide
What is NOT in the box but you should buy the same day:
- A microSD card, 256 GB minimum (see section 6 — a UHS-I A2 card is all you need; do not overpay for Express cards, the Deck cannot use their speed)
- A screen protector — the OLED’s glass is exposed; the LCD is more recessed but still worth protecting
- A USB-C dock or hub with HDMI if you want to play on a TV (the official Valve dock, or any powered USB-C hub with DisplayPort-alt-mode)
- A 65 W GaN charger for travel — smaller than the bundled 45 W brick and charges just as fast
Charge to 100% before the first long session. The Deck ships around 40%.
2. First boot and SteamOS setup (~10 min)
- Power on. Choose language, region, and time zone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi (the OLED supports Wi-Fi 6E — use the 6 GHz band if your router has it; downloads are much faster).
- Sign in to your Steam account. Your entire library, saves (Steam Cloud), and friends list come across immediately.
- Let it install the pending SteamOS update. The Deck almost always ships on older firmware; the first update improves battery and compatibility. Do not skip it.
- Reboot when prompted.
Launch firmware is consistently worse on battery and fan noise than current stable. If your Deck feels loud or dies fast out of the box, update first — Settings → System → Software Updates — then re-evaluate.
3. Enable cloud saves and pick your update channel
- Steam Cloud is on per-game by default, but confirm it: Settings → Cloud → Enable Steam Cloud. This is what lets you start a game on the Deck and finish it on your desktop.
- Update channel: Settings → System → System Update Channel. Leave it on Stable unless you have a reason not to. Beta gets fixes sooner but occasionally breaks things; Preview/Main is for testing only.
4. The settings to change before you play
These change how the Deck actually plays, not how it looks in the menus. Press the Steam button → Settings.

On the OLED (and LCD via 40 Hz), capping at 40 fps with a matching 40 Hz refresh feels far smoother than 30, uses much less power than 60, and doubles your battery in demanding games. Start here for any AAA title and only raise it if the game feels sluggish.
5. Per-game performance: the TDP + frame-cap workflow
This is where the Deck goes from “okay” to “great.” Every game gets its own profile.
- In-game, press the
•••(Quick Access) button → the Performance tab (the battery icon). - Toggle Use per-game profile at the top. Now every change you make here applies only to this game.
- Set a framerate limit (start at 40).
- Enable TDP limit and set the watts (start at 10 W).
- Play a demanding scene. If it holds your frame cap, lower the TDP until it just barely can’t — then bump it back up one step. Lower TDP = cooler, quieter, longer battery.

Two games can both hit 40 fps but pull 8 W vs 15 W — that's the difference between a 6-hour and a 3-hour session. Always drop TDP to the lowest value that still holds your cap.
6. microSD strategy: what to buy (and what NOT to)
The Deck has one microSD slot. Unlike the Switch 2, the Deck uses a standard microSD — a plain UHS-I A2 card is all it can use.
What to buy:
- Samsung PRO Plus / EVO Select (UHS-I, A2), 256–512 GB — the sweet spot
- SanDisk Extreme (UHS-I, A2) — equally fine
What NOT to buy:
- microSD Express cards — the Deck cannot use their extra speed; you would waste money (these are for the Switch 2, not the Deck)
- UHS-II cards — the Deck’s slot is UHS-I; the extra pins do nothing
How to use it: Settings → Storage → insert card → Format. Then when installing a game, pick the microSD as the install location. Move games between internal and SD anytime from Storage.
Rule of thumb: keep the games you play now on internal storage (faster loads, less stutter), and your back-catalogue on the card.
7. Battery tuning: getting 2× your playtime
Beyond the 40/40 default, three settings extend battery meaningfully:
- Cap TDP aggressively (§5) — the biggest lever by far.
- Lower screen brightness — the OLED is very bright; 50–60% is plenty indoors and saves a surprising amount.
- Enable the 80% charge limit (OLED, Settings → Battery) if the Deck mostly lives on a dock — lithium batteries age fastest sitting at 100%.
Rest, don’t shut down. Suspending (press the power button once) resumes in ~2 seconds and sips almost nothing overnight. Full shutdown is only worth it for multi-day storage.
8. Proton and compatibility: understanding the badges
SteamOS runs Linux; most games are Windows-only. Proton (Valve’s compatibility layer) translates them transparently. You rarely have to think about it, but the badges matter:
- ✅ Verified — works great out of the box, controls and text sized for the Deck. Just install and play.
- 🟡 Playable — works, but may need a tweak (external keyboard for one launcher screen, manual control config, small text).
- ❔ Unsupported — Valve hasn’t verified it; may still work perfectly. Check ProtonDB for community reports.
- ⛔ Unsupported (won’t run) — usually kernel-level anti-cheat (some competitive shooters). No workaround.
Force a different Proton version (fixes many “Unsupported” games): Game → Properties → Compatibility → “Force the use of a specific Steam Play tool” → try Proton Experimental or Proton GE (installable via the Discover store in desktop mode).
9. Desktop mode: your Deck is a full Linux PC
Hold the power button → Switch to Desktop, or Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop. You land in a full KDE Plasma desktop.
What it is actually useful for:
- Installing non-Steam launchers — the Discover store has Heroic (Epic/GOG), Lutris, and emulators. Add them to your library as “Non-Steam Games” so they show up in Game Mode.
- Proton GE — install ProtonUp-Qt from Discover to get community Proton builds in one click.
- Browser, file manager, media — it is a real PC; treat it like one.
- Right-trackpad = mouse, R2 = left click, L2 = right click, Steam + X = on-screen keyboard.
Open Konsole and run passwd to set a password for the deck user. Many desktop-mode tasks (installing system packages) need it, and the Deck ships with no password set.
10. Docking to a TV
- Connect a powered USB-C dock/hub with HDMI or DisplayPort (the official Valve Dock, or any hub with DP-alt-mode + PD passthrough).
- Plug in the 45 W charger through the dock so the Deck powers the external display without draining.
- Set external resolution in Game Mode: Quick Access → Performance, or Settings → Display.
The Deck’s APU is happiest at 1080p on a TV; 1440p/4K output works but you are still rendering at Deck-class power, so use FSR and expect 30–40 fps in AAA titles. For couch play, pair a wireless controller (Steam button → Settings → Controller → Bluetooth).
11. Frequently asked questions
Q: LCD or OLED — is it worth upgrading? A: If you already have the LCD and it works, the OLED is a quality-of-life upgrade (screen, battery, weight), not a performance one. Games run identically. Upgrade for comfort, not frame rates.
Q: Can I install Windows on it? A: Yes, but you lose the SteamOS magic (suspend/resume, per-game TDP UI, verified badges). For most people, SteamOS is the better experience. Dual-boot is possible but fiddly.
Q: Why is my game stuttering the first time I play? A: Shader pre-caching. SteamOS compiles shaders on first launch (and after driver updates). Let it finish over Wi-Fi before playing, or expect a few minutes of stutter that then goes away.
Q: Does it play Game Pass / Epic / GOG games? A: Yes, via desktop mode — install Heroic (Epic/GOG) or the Xbox Cloud browser app. See section 9.
Q: How loud is the fan? A: At low TDP (7–10 W) it’s near-silent. At 15 W sustained it’s audible but not loud. Lowering TDP (§5) is the fix.
