Path of Exile 2 3.28 Mirage League Mechanic: Orbs, Mirror Zones, and the Endgame Loop
The 3.28 Mirage League mechanic explained end to end: what Mirage Orbs do, where to use them, the mirror zone optimization, how to chain them, and how to maximize loot per minute in the campaign and maps.
TL;DR: Mirage Orbs spawn illusory monsters with 2× loot. The trick is chaining them in a safe zone for 30 seconds of bonus loot. Save your orbs for high-monster-density zones (the Docks, the Ledge, certain maps). The campaign usage and map usage are different — this guide covers both.
Who this guide is for
- You have reached the campaign (or maps) and want to optimize loot
- You keep getting one-shot by Mirage monsters
- You have hoarded 20 Mirage Orbs and don’t know where to use them
- You are not yet thinking about mirror-zone racing
This is the second guide in our zero-to-maps PoE 2 series.
1. What is a Mirage Orb?
A Mirage Orb is a consumable item dropped by monsters across all content (campaign and maps). When thrown:
- Mirage monsters spawn — duplicates of nearby monsters, but with 2× item quantity and 2× item rarity
- The orb has a 30-second timer
- Mirage monsters have increased damage (~150% of normal)
- After 30 seconds, all Mirage monsters despawn
Why this is the best loot mechanic in 3.28
- Drop rate is roughly 2× baseline for any monster type
- Spawns are stackable — multiple orbs in one zone spawn multiple waves
- The mechanic scales with map tier — Tier 16 maps with Mirages give the highest loot/hour
The catch
- Mirage monsters do more damage, so you need a build that survives the burst
- The timer is short — 30 seconds is enough for 1–2 packs, not 5
- Bosses and unique monsters cannot be miraged — save them for trash zones
2. Campaign usage: when to pop an orb
In the campaign, Mirage Orbs are rare drops. Using them at the right moment matters.
The good moments
- Town transitions: when you first enter a new act (Act 2 town, Act 3 docks), the zones have high monster density in a tight space. Pop an orb, kill 8–12 Mirage monsters, pick up the loot
- Vault runs: in Act 3, the Vault zone has a long narrow corridor perfect for Mirages
- The Ledge: Act 1’s The Ledge has tight corridors with 3–4 elite packs
The bad moments
- Boss arenas: Mirage doesn’t apply to bosses, you waste the orb
- Wide open zones: monsters scatter, you can’t catch them all in 30 seconds
- During the “find the exit” objective: you spend time looking for the exit while Mirage monsters despawn
Common pitfall: popping an orb during a boss fight because “I have one and might as well.” Bosses don’t mirage. Save it for the next zone.
3. Map usage: the proper Mirage loop
Once you reach maps (post-Merciless Act 3), Mirage becomes your main loot amplifier.
The map-tier Mirage rule
| Map tier | Mirage efficiency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1–5 | Low | Your build is weak, Mirage monsters will kill you |
| Tier 6–10 | Medium | Good for learning the mechanic |
| Tier 11–15 | High | Sweet spot for most players |
| Tier 16 | Highest | For fully-geared characters only |
The chain technique
The advanced Mirage trick is chaining orbs — popping a second orb 10 seconds before the first expires.
- First orb at the start of a dense pack
- Second orb at the 20-second mark, slightly offset so the new Mirage spawns in a different spot
- Third orb at the 30-second mark, if you have it
The result: 60 seconds of continuous 2× loot instead of two separate 30-second windows.
Common pitfall: popping all orbs at once. The waves overlap and the screen becomes unplayable. Stagger them.
4. The best zones for Mirages
Some map tilesets have higher monster density and tighter corridors, making them Mirage-friendly.
| Zone | Why | Tileset notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Ledge | 4 elite packs in a tight corridor | Great for first orbs |
| The Docks | Wide spawn, but high monster count | Use AoE skills |
| The Crypt (Act 1) | Multiple rooms, easy chaining | Best for chain orbs |
| The Mines (Act 2) | Narrow tunnels | Tight timing |
| The Vault (Act 3) | Single long corridor | Easy 30-sec clear |
| Map: Cemetery | High density, linear layout | Endgame favorite |
| Map: Dungeon | Multi-room layout | Best for chain orbs |
| Map: Arcade | Wide layout but dense | Less ideal |
Common pitfall: running wide-open maps like Strand or Beach with Mirage. You spend the 30 seconds chasing one monster. Pick narrow maps.
5. The damage-vs-survival tradeoff
Mirage monsters do ~150% damage. If your build is squishy, you have two options:
| Option | Cost | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Don’t pop orbs | You miss 2× loot | Stay alive |
| Pop orbs in safe zones | Lower monster count | Get partial 2× loot |
| Gear up first | Time investment | Pop orbs safely later |
The recommendation
- Below Tier 11 maps: don’t pop orbs. Your build isn’t ready
- Tier 11–15: pop orbs in safe dense zones only (Cemetery, Dungeon)
- Tier 16 with a 90%+ max-resist build: pop orbs freely
Common pitfall: dying 5 times in Tier 8 maps because you popped a Mirage orb on a 3-pack of cold-resistant rares. Wait until your build is ready.
6. The new currency: Mirage Shards
A side effect of killing Mirage monsters: they sometimes drop Mirage Shards, a 3.28-specific currency.
What Mirage Shards do
- Spend at the League Vendor in your hideout
- Buy: Mirage Orb bundle (5 orbs for 20 shards), unique item (random from a pool), cosmetic weapon effect
The farming loop
- High-tier map → Mirage chain → ~3–5 shards per run
- 60 shards = a free random unique
- 100 shards = a guaranteed unique of your choice (limited pool)
Common pitfall: spending shards on cosmetics. Save them for the guaranteed unique at 100 shards — it’s the best rate in the league.
7. Common mistakes with Mirage
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Popping orb, then running away | Monsters despawn after 30 sec | Stay and kill, even if it’s 1 monster |
| Popping orb at start of map | Wastes orbs on weak trash | Save for the dense zones in the map |
| Popping orb in boss arena | Boss doesn’t mirage | Wait for after the boss |
| Not picking up the loot | Mirage monsters drop 2× loot, you leave it | Pick up immediately before despawn |
| Hoarding orbs forever | They are consumables, use them | Use 1 orb per map minimum |
8. Advanced: the “Mirage dump” map
The most efficient Mirage-farming strategy is a single-zone dump:
- Pick a linear, narrow map (Cemetery, Dungeon)
- Roll it blue / rare / magic for maximum monster count and density
- Run the map with Alch + Chaos for map mods (more mobs = more Mirage value)
- At each elite pack, pop a Mirage Orb
- Chain orbs for the entire map duration
A 3-minute Cemetery with 4–5 orbs gives more loot than a 10-minute Strand with 1 orb.
9. How Mirage interacts with other league mechanics
| Interaction | Notes |
|---|---|
| Strongboxes | Mirages of strongbox monsters are guaranteed rare |
| Abysses | Mirage Abyssal monsters drop double Stygian Vises |
| Expedition | Mirage Explosive monsters can chain — be careful |
| Ritual | Mirage Ritual monsters add to the Favor pool |
| Delirium | Do NOT combine — the screen becomes unplayable |
Common pitfall: stacking Mirage with Delirium. You will see 50+ monsters on screen and your FPS drops to 5. Pick one mechanic per map.
10. When to stop using Mirage
The Mirage mechanic is the headline of 3.28, but by week 4 of the league, most players have enough gear that Mirage is no longer the main loot source. The endgame shifts to:
- Bossing (Uber versions, T17 maps)
- Crafting (using Exalted Orbs and Divines)
- Race content (the league finale race)
Use Mirage heavily in weeks 1–3, taper off in weeks 4–6, retire the mechanic by week 8.
11. Next steps
You now understand the Mirage mechanic end to end. The natural next read is Currency & Crafting: The Endgame Economy — once you have loot from Mirages, you need to know what to do with the currency.
If you want to learn the underlying rules first, see Core Mechanics: Skill Gems, Support Gems, and the Passive Tree.
Version note (2026-07-18): Based on Path of Exile 2 Patch 3.28 (“Mirage League”). Mirage Orb drop rates, shard economy, and monster damage multipliers may be tuned in mid-league patches. The chain technique (orb at 0s + 20s + 30s) and the map-tier scaling rule are stable community consensus.
