Marvel Rivals Ultimate Economy: Charge, Trade, Combo, and When to Hold

The single most under-taught Master-rank skill: how to read Ultimate charge, trade Ults correctly, combo with your team, and know when holding is better than using. Includes 5 common Ult-economy mistakes and the rules that fix them.

TL;DR: Ultimate economy is the silent game inside Marvel Rivals — every kill gives the enemy Ult charge, every Ult can win or lose a team fight, and the team that manages Ults better wins. Most players use Ults reactively (“I have it, I use it”). Master-rank players use Ults strategically (“I hold, then combo with my team”). This is the difference between Diamond and Master.

Who this guide is for

  • You have read the ranked system guide
  • You are Diamond+ and want to push for Master
  • You feel like “every team fight is decided by which team uses Ults first”
  • You want to understand the silent game of Ult charge

This is the eighth guide in our zero-to-competitive Marvel Rivals series and the second in the “advanced / ranked” block.

1. What “Ultimate economy” actually means

Ultimate economy is the management of when to use your Ultimate ability relative to:

  • Your own charge (how full your Ult bar is)
  • Your team’s Ults (what other teammates have ready)
  • The enemy’s Ults (what you have seen them use, what you suspect they have)
  • The fight’s stakes (is this a winnable fight, or should you retreat?)

The team that wins the Ult economy wins more team fights, which wins more matches.

The “Ult wins team fights” baseline

Most Ults in Marvel Rivals are designed to win a team fight when used at the right time. They are NOT designed to win a 1v1 duel. New players use them for 1v1 duels (waste), Master players use them for team fights (win).

Common pitfall: “I have my Ult, I should use it.” No. You should use it when the team fight is set up. Otherwise you are feeding.

2. How Ult charge fills (the rules you need)

You already know the basics from the Core Mechanics guide. Here is the economy-level version:

ActionCharge gainedNotes
Deal damage to enemiesHighDuelists and Vanguards gain fast
Take damage from enemiesHighVanguards gain fastest (they take the most)
Heal / buff alliesMediumStrategists gain slower than damage dealers
Block damage with shieldLowDefensive actions are weaker charge sources
Stand near the objectiveLowSlow trickle charge for being on point

Per-role typical charge time (full match, even fight)

RoleApproximate charge time
Vanguard~1.5–2 minutes of full combat
Duelist~2.5–3 minutes
Strategist~3.5–4 minutes

These shift with hero, but the order is stable: tanks charge fastest, then DPS, then supports.

3. The Ult trade: the single most important concept

A trade is when one team uses an Ult and the other team responds with their own Ult. The team that wins the trade is the team that gets more value.

Trade examples

ScenarioWho wins the trade
Enemy Luna uses Ult to save 3 teammates. Your Hulk uses Ult to kill 2 of them.You. You killed 2, she saved 3 but the next fight is even.
Enemy Hulk uses Ult, your team all retreats.You. You saved your Ults for the next fight.
Enemy Storm uses Ult, your Luna uses Ult to save your team.You. You neutralized their big play.
You use your Ult for 1 kill, enemy uses theirs for 3 kills.Enemy. You wasted yours.

The “trade window” rule

After the enemy uses a big Ult, there is a trade window of ~10–15 seconds where they cannot respond to your Ult. This is when you should use yours.

FightAction
Enemy Hulk just used his Ult (smash + pull)You have 10 seconds. Push their team, use your Ult on the grouped enemies.
Enemy Luna just used hers to save her teamHer Ult is on CD. You have 15 seconds. Push and use yours.
Enemy just used 2 Ults in one fight (Hulk + Luna)They have nothing left. You should win the next fight.

Common pitfall: using your Ult when the enemy has a counter-Ult ready. Wait for them to use theirs first, then combo.

4. The Ult combo: coordinated Ults win fights

A combo is when 2+ teammates use their Ults in the same fight for multiplied value.

Common combos in S9

ComboWhat happensWhy it wins
Hulk Ult + Luna UltHulk pulls 3 enemies together, Luna heals the team through the burstYou survive their counter, they die to the follow-up
Storm Ult + Human Torch UltBoth AoE fire Ults overlap on a 3-enemy groupBoth damage Ults stack — enemies evaporate
Magik Ult + Spider-Man UltMagik teleports the enemy team into a bad spot, Spider-Man finishesSetup + cleanup
Hela Ult + Punisher UltBoth hitscan Ults layer sustained damage on a defended pointTanks melt before the supports can save them

How to set up a combo

  1. Communicate in voice / chat (“I have Hulk Ult, I will engage. Luna, save yours for after I pull.”)
  2. One player engages (the “setup” — usually the tank or flanker)
  3. The other player follows 1-2 seconds later (the “cleanup” — usually the DPS or support)
  4. The team collapses on the disabled enemies

Common pitfall: “I have my Ult, I use it alone.” Solo Ults win fewer fights than combo Ults. Ping “Ult ready” before you commit.

5. The 5 Ult-economy mistakes at Diamond

MistakeWhat it looks likeWhy it losesFix
Use on a 1v1You burn your Ult to kill a low-HP enemyYou had no Ult for the next team fightSave for 3+ enemies grouped
Use when the enemy has a counter readyYou use your Ult, the enemy Luna saves her teamYou feed the fight to the enemyWait for the enemy’s counter Ult to be used first
Use when the fight is already lost2 teammates are dead, you Ult anywayYou die, the enemy gets more chargeRetreat, regroup, then push
Use on a “save myself”You are at 10% HP, you Ult to clear the enemyThe enemy team was already winning; you gave them a kill + your UltRetreat without using your Ult. Live for the next fight.
Don’t communicate UltsYou have Hulk Ult, your Luna has Luna Ult, you both use them at the same timeOne of you wasted it. The combo was uncoordinated.Ping “Ult ready” before you commit.

6. When to HOLD your Ult (the underrated skill)

Sometimes the best use of your Ult is not using it yet. Holding is correct when:

SituationWhy hold
The enemy has a counter-Ult ready (e.g. they have a Luna at 90%)You will get countered; wait for them to use it
The next fight is in 30+ secondsSave it for the next fight instead of forcing a 1v1
You are the only Ult-ready player on your teamA solo Ult without setup usually loses. Wait for teammates.
The objective is lost alreadySave it for the next objective. Don’t waste it on a fight you can’t win.

Common pitfall: “I am holding and they are complaining I am not using it.” Holding is a skill. Communicate that you are waiting for the right moment.

7. When to FORCE your Ult (the other underrated skill)

Sometimes you must use your Ult even in a bad situation. Force when:

SituationWhy force
The fight is winnable if you use itBetter to force and trade than to die with it unused
The enemy is about to cap the point and you need to contestForce to stop the cap, even if the trade is bad
You will die in 2 seconds and the Ult is on a self-save timerUse it as an escape, not a fight-win
The team is staggering and you need to give them a windowForce to create space for respawns to come back

Common pitfall: “I never want to use my Ult unless it’s perfect.” Perfection is rare. Sometimes a 70% Ult is better than no Ult.

8. Reading the enemy Ult economy

You can guess what Ults the enemy has by:

You saw thisThe enemy probably has
Their Luna just used her UltThey have no support Ult for ~15 seconds
Their Hulk just smashed 2 of your teammatesThey have no tank Ult for ~10 seconds
The enemy team has been winning team fights without UltsThey are saving — they probably have 2+ Ults ready
The enemy has been losing team fights without UltsThey are low on charge — push the next fight

The “they have 3 Ults, we have 0” rule

If the enemy has multiple Ults and you have none, do not engage. Farm charge from minions, objective time, or poke damage. Wait until you have at least 1 Ult before you take a team fight.

Common pitfall: fighting 6v6 when the enemy has 3 Ults and you have 0. You will lose 100% of these fights. Wait. Farm. Then fight.

9. The Ult-economy mindset

Think of every match as a Ult resource game:

  • You start with 0 Ults on each side
  • Every fight gives charge to both teams
  • The team that uses Ults better wins
  • “Better” means: trade correctly, combo with teammates, hold for the right moment

You don’t have to be perfect. You have to be 80% correct. The enemy team is 50% correct. That 30% gap is your climb.

10. Frequently asked questions

Q: My Ult feels weak. Is it bugged? A: No — you are probably using it on a 1v1. Ults are designed for team fights.

Q: How do I know when the enemy has a counter-Ult? A: Track the enemy’s charge bars (you can see them on the enemy hero icons). If their Luna is at 90%+, she has hers ready.

Q: Should I tell my team I have Ult? A: Yes. Ping “Ultimate ready” before you commit. Your team can set up the combo.

Q: What if my team never combos with me? A: Either ping more, or use your Ult as a setup (engage first, let the team follow up).

Q: Is Ultimate economy more important than aim? A: At Master+, yes. Aim gets you to Diamond. Ult economy gets you to Master.

11. Next steps

You now know Ultimate economy. The natural next read is Matchups and Counters — once you can manage Ults, you need to manage who you are playing against in the lane / matchup.

If you want to specialize in one hero first, our Hero Mastery section (coming soon) covers the top heroes in S9 with full Ult-timing recommendations.

Version note (2026-07-15): Based on Marvel Rivals Season 9 (“Convergence”). Ult charge sources, the trade window concept, and the combo principle are stable and have not changed since launch. Specific Ult numbers (damage, duration, range) shift with patches — check the in-game ability descriptions.
