Marvel Rivals Matchups and Counters: How to Read the Enemy Comp and Adjust Your Play
How to read the enemy team composition, what hard counters look like in Marvel Rivals, the 3-step process to adjust when you are being countered, and why most 'I am countered' complaints are actually positioning complaints.
TL;DR: Most “I am hard-countered” complaints are actually positioning complaints in disguise. True hard counters are rare in Marvel Rivals — usually you can outplay the counter with better positioning, better cooldown tracking, or a single team-swap. Master-rank players do three things: read the enemy comp in 10 seconds, identify the actual threat to them, adjust play (or hero) within the first 30 seconds.
Who this guide is for
- You have read the Ultimate Economy and Ranked System guides
- You are Diamond+ and want to push for Master
- You feel like “their team has the answer to everything I do”
- You are not yet thinking about the leaderboard
This is the ninth guide in our zero-to-competitive Marvel Rivals series and the third in the “advanced / ranked” block.
1. What a “counter” actually is in Marvel Rivals
A counter is a hero whose kit naturally beats yours. The counter works through one of three mechanisms:
| Counter mechanism | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Range | They can hit you from outside your effective range | Storm (aerial) vs. Punisher (ground) — Storm has range and elevation |
| Mobility | They can escape or reposition in ways you cannot | Spider-Man vs. Hulk — Spider-Man can dodge Hulk’s slow abilities |
| Sustain / shield break | They out-heal or out-shield your damage | Luna Snow vs. Hela — Luna’s healing outpaces Hela’s burst |
A hard counter is when a hero has all three against you. A soft counter is one or two. Most “counters” in Marvel Rivals are soft — you can outplay them.
Common pitfall: blaming the enemy hero for your death. 80% of the time, the death is positioning. You are in their range, you are in their line of sight, you are not tracking their cooldowns. Fix the positioning first.
2. The 10-second comp read (what to look at first)
When the match starts and you see the enemy team, run this scan in 10 seconds:
| Step | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Aerial heroes? | Count flying heroes (Storm, Iron Man, Human Torch, Captain Marvel) | Tells you whether you need anti-air |
| 2. Flankers? | Count divers (Spider-Man, Magik, Black Panther, Psylocke) | Tells you whether your back line is at risk |
| 3. Sustain supports? | Look for Luna, Cloak & Dagger, Invisible Woman | Tells you whether burst or sustained damage wins |
| 4. Tanks with mobility? | Look for Venom, Thor, Mister Fantastic | Tells you whether the enemy can collapse fast |
| 5. Known combo? | Look for the meta duos (Storm + Torch, Luna + Invisible Woman) | Tells you whether to ban or counter them |
After this scan, you should have a rough sense of what kind of team the enemy is running — brawl, dive, aerial, or sustain.
Common pitfall: not scanning until the fight starts. By then, you are already dead. Scan during the loading screen.
3. The three categories of enemy comp (and how to play each)
Most enemy comps fall into one of three categories. Each has a clear counter-style.
Brawl comp (close-range tanks + frontline supports)
- Examples: Hulk + Captain America + Mister Fantastic + Luna + Rocket
- How to identify: 2+ tanks in your face, supports hugging the tanks, no aerial heroes
- Your counter-style: Sustained damage at range. Heroes like Hela, Iron Man, Storm punish a brawl comp because the brawl cannot reach you
- Key tactic: Do not push into them. Take range, break their frontline slowly, wait for them to over-extend
Dive comp (multiple flankers + mobile supports)
- Examples: Spider-Man + Magik + Black Panther + Storm + Mister Fantastic
- How to identify: 2+ heroes with high mobility, supports with peel (Luna, Invisible Woman)
- Your counter-style: Anti-dive + peel. Heroes with anti-flank tools (Mantis sleep, Cloak & Dagger shield, Hulk body-block) punish a dive comp
- Key tactic: Stick close to your supports. The dive comp wants to isolate your back line. Don’t let them.
Aerial comp (multiple flying heroes + ground divers)
- Examples: Storm + Iron Man + Human Torch + Captain Marvel + Mister Fantastic
- How to identify: 3+ heroes who can spend significant time in the air
- Your counter-style: Hitscan with vertical mobility + flanker to punish the landings. Heroes like Hela (hitscan), Punisher (hitscan), and a Spider-Man to dive them when they land
- Key tactic: Punish the landings. Aerial heroes have to land eventually. Pre-aim where they will land.
Sustain comp (healing-heavy + brawly)
- Examples: Luna + Invisible Woman + Hulk + Captain America + Storm
- How to identify: 2 Strategists, or 1 Strategist with high sustain, multiple tanks
- Your counter-style: Burst damage + anti-heal. Heroes with burst windows (Hela headshot, Punisher burst) and anti-heal effects (Cloak & Dagger, Mantis)
- Key tactic: Burst the supports down. Sustain wins long fights; burst wins short fights. Make every fight short.
Common pitfall: trying to out-brawl a brawl comp. You won’t. Out-range them, out-flank them, or out-burst them. Don’t fight their fight.
4. The 3-step counter-adjust process (when you are getting destroyed)
You are dying over and over. The enemy hero is “countering” you. Run this:
Step 1: Diagnose (15 seconds)
| Question | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Am I dying because I cannot reach them? | They have range advantage. You need vertical mobility or a longer-range swap. |
| Am I dying because they can escape me? | They have mobility advantage. You need a hero with CC or a teammate to pin them. |
| Am I dying because they out-heal my damage? | They have sustain advantage. You need burst or anti-heal. |
| Am I dying because they always have a teammate when we 1v1? | They have peel advantage. You need to isolate them, or take a different target. |
Step 2: Adjust your play first (15 seconds)
Before swapping heroes, try adjusting your positioning:
- Move to high ground
- Take a longer range
- Wait for their key cooldowns to be down
- Take a teammate with you
In 50%+ of cases, a positioning fix solves the “counter” problem.
Step 3: Swap only if play adjustment fails
If after a few lives you are still dying the same way, swap:
| Counter to you | Swap to |
|---|---|
| Storm (aerial) is killing you | Punisher / Hela (hitscan, can hit aerial) |
| Spider-Man (flanker) is killing you | Luna / Mantis / Hulk (anti-flank) |
| Luna (sustain) is out-healing you | Cloak & Dagger (anti-heal) / burst DPS |
| Hulk (brawl) is bodying you | Storm / Iron Man (range) |
Common pitfall: swapping on the first death. Try positioning first. Swap on the third death of the same pattern.
5. The “swap meta” — when the team comp is wrong
Sometimes the problem is not you being countered. The problem is the team comp is wrong.
Common bad comps and the fix
| Bad comp | Why it loses | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 4-1-0 (4 tanks, 1 DPS, 0 supports) | No damage, no heals | One tank flexes to support, one flexes to DPS |
| 0-5-1 (0 tanks, 5 DPS, 1 support) | No frontline, support gets dove | One DPS flexes to tank |
| 0-0-6 (no tanks, no DPS, 6 supports) | No damage, no space | The team forgot to play the game |
Common pitfall: refusing to flex because “I queued as DPS.” A 4-1-0 team loses 95% of the time. Flex.
6. Reading the enemy’s counter to your counter
Sometimes you swap to a hero who counters the enemy, but the enemy also swaps to counter you. This is the counter-swap war.
| Your hero | Their counter | Their counter’s counter | Their counter’s counter’s counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hela | Storm (aerial) | Storm gets dived by Spider-Man | Spider-Man gets peeled by Luna |
| Luna | Spider-Man (dive) | Spider-Man gets hit by Mantis sleep | Mantis gets dove by Magik |
| Storm | Hela (hitscan) | Hela gets flanked by Spider-Man | Spider-Man gets peeled by Luna |
The “counter chain” is a loop. Most games are won by the team that counter-swaps better, not the team that counter-swaps first.
Common pitfall: counter-swapping without communicating with the team. Tell the team in chat. “Their Storm keeps killing me, I’m swapping to Hela. Someone peel our back line.”
7. Hero-specific counter notes (S9 quick reference)
Below are the strongest known counters in S9. The list shifts per season — always check the in-game tier list.
S9 counters (most reliable)
| Your hero | Hard countered by | Soft countered by | How to play if hard-countered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hela | Storm, Iron Man (aerial) | Mister Fantastic (shield) | Take high ground, peek shoot, swap to Punisher if you cannot reach |
| Storm | Hela, Punisher (hitscan with vertical) | Luna (anti-air via Ult) | Land and re-position often, never stay aerial too long |
| Spider-Man | Hulk, Mantis (CC) | Luna (anti-flank) | Take fights when their CC is on cooldown, don’t 1v1 tanks |
| Luna Snow | Spider-Man, Magik (dive) | Mantis (sleep her) | Take high ground, save self-save for when the diver is close |
| Hulk | Storm, Iron Man (range) | Luna (sustain) | Don’t push into range, take cover, wait for them to come to you |
| Punisher | Spider-Man, Magik (dive) | Mister Fantastic (shield) | Stay near your supports, take fights in open ground |
Common pitfall: hard-countering a hero means automatic loss. It means a 30-40% disadvantage if both players are equally skilled. You can still win with a hard counter against you, but you need to compensate elsewhere.
8. The “counter-victim” mindset shift
Most players who complain about being countered are actually doing 3 things wrong:
- They stand in the same spot every fight. The counter has learned where you are.
- They take 1v1 fights when the counter is up. The counter is designed to win 1v1.
- They don’t track the counter’s cooldowns. The counter has a “vulnerable” window. You play around it.
The fix is not “swap to a different hero.” The fix is:
- Vary your positioning (move every 10-15 seconds)
- Take 1v2 or 2v2 fights so the counter cannot isolate you
- Track and punish the cooldown (the counter is vulnerable for ~10 seconds after using their big ability)
Common pitfall: thinking the enemy hero is the problem. The enemy player is the problem. They outplayed you. Outplay them back, or swap.
9. Frequently asked questions
Q: How do I know if I am hard-countered or just outplayed? A: If you can change one positioning habit and stop dying the same way, you are outplayed. If you change everything and still die, you are hard-countered.
Q: Should I swap on the first death to a counter? A: No. Swap on the third death of the same pattern. First two deaths are positioning. Third one is the data.
Q: What if my team refuses to swap to enable me? A: Either swap yourself, or play around it. You cannot control your team. Control your hero choice and your positioning.
Q: Is there a “best hero” that is never countered? A: No. Every hero has a counter. Master-rank players swap heroes 2-3 times per match. Adaptability is the skill.
Q: How do I practice counter-reading? A: After each match, write down 1 thing the enemy did that beat you. After 20 matches, you have a counter-pattern library in your head.
