Marvel Rivals Team-Up Skills: The Complete Guide to Marvel's Signature Mechanic

Team-Up skills are Marvel Rivals' defining feature — bonus abilities unlocked when specific hero pairs are on the same team. This guide lists every strong combo, how to build around them in ranked, and the common drafting mistakes.

TL;DR: Team-Up skills are bonus abilities that activate when specific hero pairs are on the same team. They are the single biggest reason team comp matters in Marvel Rivals — picking two heroes that share a Team-Up is often stronger than picking two stronger individual heroes that do not. Always check the Team-Up tab in the hero select screen.

Who this guide is for

  • You understand the three roles and the core mechanics
  • You are about to start playing ranked or coordinated Quick Match
  • You want to know why some hero pairs feel unstoppable and others feel weak
  • You do not need this if you only play Quick Match and never think about comp

This is the fourth guide in our zero-to-competitive Marvel Rivals series. Read it before you start ranked.

1. What Team-Up skills actually are

A Team-Up skill is a bonus ability that is added to one or both heroes’ kits only when a specific partner hero is also on the team.

Example (illustrative — actual names and effects change per patch):

  • Hero A and Hero B on the same team → Hero A gets a new ability: “Gamma Smash” (extra damage burst)
  • Hero C and Hero D on the same team → Hero C’s primary fire now applies a slow

Team-Ups are designed to reward deliberate hero pairing. They are the reason you cannot just pick 6 of the strongest heroes in a vacuum — sometimes a slightly weaker hero enables a much stronger Team-Up for a teammate.

Where to find them

  • In hero select: every hero has a “Team-Up” tab showing which other heroes trigger which bonus
  • In-game UI: when you have an active Team-Up, you will see a small icon next to the affected ability
  • Patch notes: NetEase rebalances Team-Ups regularly. The strongest combos in Season 8 are not the strongest combos in Season 9.

Common pitfall: ignoring the Team-Up tab because you are a “main” player. Your main is stronger with the right partner than with the wrong one. Check the tab.

2. How Team-Ups change team building

Without Team-Ups, team building is just “pick 2 tanks / 2 DPS / 2 supports.” With Team-Ups, you add a second layer:

Layer 1 (role balance): 2-2-2 default. Flex only when needed.

Layer 2 (Team-Up chains): each hero you pick should either:

  • Enable a strong Team-Up for a teammate, OR
  • Be enabled by a teammate’s pick

If your hero does neither, you are playing a hero that is not connected to your team. That is usually a sign to swap.

The 6-person Team-Up chain

A 6-person team can have 3 active Team-Ups at most (one per pair on the team). A well-built team chains all three:

Hero A + Hero B → Team-Up #1
Hero C + Hero D → Team-Up #2
Hero E + Hero F → Team-Up #3 (or carry a solo flex pick)

A poorly built team has 0 active Team-Ups because nobody bothered to coordinate. That is a guaranteed disadvantage against any coordinated opponent.

3. Strong Team-Up combos in Season 9

Note: exact combos shift every patch. The list below is accurate as of Season 9 (July 2026). Always check the in-game Team-Up tab for the current season.

S-tier combos (must-pick level synergy)

Hero AHero BWhat the Team-Up doesWhy it works
StormHuman TorchBoth gain an AoE damage burst on a shared cooldownTwo aerial heroes with overlapping damage. Covers a huge area.
HulkDoctor StrangeHulk gains a slam that pulls enemies togetherHulk + Strange is the textbook brawl setup.
Luna SnowInvisible WomanLuna’s healing aura expands; Invisible Woman gets a damage boostTwo of the strongest Strategists of S9, both buffed by being together.

A-tier combos (very strong, draft when possible)

Hero AHero BWhat the Team-Up doesWhy it works
Spider-ManIron ManSpider-Man gains a web-pull that drags enemies toward Iron ManClassic dive + artillery setup.
MagikBlack PantherMagik’s portal gains extra range; Panther’s dash resets on killMobile duo that snowballs off cleanup kills.
Cloak & DaggerMister FantasticC&D’s two-mode kit gets smoother transitions; Mr. Fantastic gains a shieldStrong Strategist + flex Vanguard synergy.
HelaPunisherBoth gain a damage boost when fighting near each otherHitscan duo that melts tanks.

B-tier combos (situational, good in the right context)

Hero AHero BWhat the Team-Up doesWhen to draft
GrootRocket RaccoonGroot’s walls give Rocket bonus cover; Rocket heals GrootWhen you want a wall-heavy defensive comp.
Captain AmericaWinter Soldier (if available)Cap gains a shield throw; Bucky gains a burst dashBrawl comps.
MantisAdam WarlockMantis’s sleep confirms into Adam’s burstSleep-combo comps.

The list is not exhaustive. New combos are added every season. The principle is what matters: always check who your teammates have picked and see if a Team-Up unlocks.

4. Drafting around Team-Ups: a 30-second checklist

You are in hero select. You have ~30 seconds to decide. Run through this:

QuestionWhy it matters
What has my team already locked? If your Duelist locked Spider-Man, you should strongly consider Iron Man to enable the Team-Up.
Does the enemy team have a hard counter to my main?If so, swap. Don’t be a martyr.
What Team-Up does the enemy team likely have?If you see a known combo on the enemy, draft the heroes that disrupt it (a flanker who can dive their back line, for example).
Are we missing a role?3 Strategists and 0 Duelists = lose. Flex.

The “I am the last pick” scenario

You are pick #6. Your team has:

  • Hulk (Vanguard)
  • Captain America (Vanguard)
  • Luna Snow (Strategist)
  • Invisible Woman (Strategist)
  • Storm (Duelist)

The bad pick: Punisher (a Duelist, but no Team-Up with anyone on your team).

The good pick: Human Torch (Duelist, enables the Storm + Human Torch Team-Up) or Mr. Fantastic (Vanguard, pairs with Cloak & Dagger if you had one, or pairs with Storm for some Season-specific bonuses).

The difference is: your Team-Up just became active, and you got a free bonus ability for the entire match.

5. Common Team-Up mistakes

Mistake 1: Picking a hero that does not connect

You: Spider-Man (no Team-Up with anyone on team)
Result: You play the same Spider-Man you would have, with no bonus

Fix: check the Team-Up tab before locking. If you see no green connections, ask the team if anyone can flex to enable you.

Mistake 2: Forcing a Team-Up that requires bad players

You want Storm + Human Torch combo
But your friend is bad at Human Torch
You pick Human Torch, hoping they switch to Storm

Fix: don’t lock in a hero you don’t know how to play just to enable a Team-Up. The combo is worthless if you feed. Play what you can play, suggest combos as a backup.

Mistake 3: Not communicating in voice / chat

The Team-Up system is designed for coordinated play. If you are solo-queuing without chat, you will not get many combos. The fix is not “play more combos” — it is “find a duo queue partner or join a community.”

Common pitfall: blaming teammates for not enabling your Team-Up. You can suggest in chat. If they don’t switch, you can switch to enable theirs. Be the flexible one.

6. Team-Ups and the meta (S9 specifically)

The S9 meta is defined by the Storm + Human Torch combo, which is the strongest single pairing in the game right now. If you are playing ranked and the enemy team has both, you need to:

  • Ban one of them (if you have a high enough pick)
  • Dive them early before they combo you
  • Draft anti-air (hitscan with vertical mobility, or a flanker who can reach them)

Other meta-defining combos in S9:

  • Hulk + Strange for brawl-heavy team comps
  • Luna + Invisible Woman for sustain-heavy team comps
  • Spider-Man + Iron Man for pick-heavy team comps

If your team picks 3 heroes from 3 different combos without sharing any, you are losing the Team-Up war before the match starts. Pick at least one duo.

7. Team-Ups in casual vs ranked

ModeHow much Team-Ups matter
Practice RangeNone
Quick MatchLow. Most players pick what they want.
CompetitiveHigh. Coordinated teams will outdraft uncoordinated ones.
Custom lobbies / scrimsExtreme. Some heroes are only viable in Team-Up-enabled comps.

If you only play Quick Match, you can ignore Team-Ups most of the time. If you touch ranked even casually, learn at least 3 strong combos and try to draft one per game.

8. Building your “combo pool”

After 30+ hours of play, aim to know these well:

  • Your main + 2 strong partners for the same role (so you can flex without losing your Team-Up)
  • 1 full brawl combo (Hulk + Strange + Captain America + Luna + Spider-Man + Invisible Woman, as an example)
  • 1 full dive combo (Spider-Man + Magik + Iron Man + Storm + Mister Fantastic + Luna, as an example)
  • 1 sustain combo (Luna + Invisible Woman + Hulk + Captain America + Hela + Storm, as an example)

That is 3 memorized comps. From there, you can adapt any draft.

9. Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I have more than one Team-Up active at a time? A: Yes, up to 3 (one per pair). Build your team to chain them.

Q: Do Team-Ups work in Quick Match? A: Yes, but most players don’t coordinate around them.

Q: What if my main is not in any strong combo? A: Either learn a combo partner, or accept you will not have a Team-Up. Both are valid.

Q: Do Team-Ups change between seasons? A: Yes. NetEase rebalances them regularly. Always check the in-game tab at the start of a new season.

Q: Should I play a hero I am bad at just to enable a Team-Up? A: No. Play what you can play. Suggest combos in chat. If nobody flexes, flex yourself.

10. Next steps

You now understand Team-Ups. The natural next read is our Ranked Play series (coming in the second wave) — once you can draft around combos, you can climb with intent.

If you want to specialize in a single hero first, our Hero Mastery section (also coming soon) covers the top heroes in S9 with full combo recommendations.

Version note (2026-07-15): Based on Marvel Rivals Season 9 (“Convergence”). The strongest combos listed are accurate for S9 but will shift in S10. Always verify the current Team-Up tab in hero select. The mechanics of how Team-Ups work (bonus abilities, 3-active max, pair-based activation) are stable and have not changed since the system launched.
