Update 17.661.002 is the largest patch Halo Studios has shipped since Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on 2026-07-28. The patch touches four layers of the game at once: the rebuilt Slipspace Engine rendering pipeline, the campaign’s post-processing stack, the cross-platform balance / hit-registration code, and the live-ops content calendar (three new METEORITE prequel operations + the free Recompilation Armor Style). Rendering and upscaling changes

The biggest visual change is the post-processing split. Pre-8/17, Chromatic Aberration (the colored fringing around high-contrast edges) and Film Grain (the animated noise overlay) were bundled into a single Post-Processing slider — you could not disable one without disabling the other. Post-8/17, both have independent toggles in Settings → Video → Post-Processing, and both default to Off for first-time setup to give players explicit control.

The second visual change is the new ‘None’ Upscaling Technique on PC. Pre-8/17, the three options were AMD FSR 2, NVIDIA DLSS, and Intel XeSS. Post-8/17, a fourth option ‘None’ renders the campaign at native resolution with no upscaling or reconstruction. The trade-off is GPU cost, but the image quality is the cleanest possible — no reconstruction artifacts, no ghosting, no temporal noise.

The third visual change is Frame Generation stability. Pre-8/17, NVIDIA Frame Generation (RTX 40 / 50 series) would stall when crossing scene-load boundaries — entering the Pillar of Autumn’s cryo bay, exiting the Pillar of Autumn onto the Halo ring surface, and similar transitions. Post-8/17, Frame Generation holds across scene loads on RTX 4070 / 4080 / 4090 / 5080 / 5090 hardware, delivering the full ~80-120 fps uplift. AMD FSR Frame Generation is not supported in this title.

Cross-platform balance and hit-registration

The 8/17 patch also fixed the cross-platform Assault Rifle imbalance. Pre-8/17, the AR fired slower and tighter on Xbox and PC than on PS5 — a rounding bug in the fire-rate and spread code that affected the Xbox and PC builds but not the PS5 build. Post-8/17, the AR is aligned to the PS5 baseline across all three platforms. The fix is the same bullet velocity, the same rate of fire, and the same bullet spread on Xbox / PC / PS5.

The 8/17 patch also improved Jackal hit-registration. Pre-8/17, Jackal shield-pieces would occasionally block headshots when the player fired at an angle that should have hit the exposed head. Post-8/17, the shield-vs-head hitbox is more generous, and Jackal shield-pieces no longer block headshots that clear the shield silhouette.

The 8/17 patch also fixed the Sgt. Johnson ‘Boarding Action’ mission progress bug. Pre-8/17, the ‘Boarding Action’ mission could fail to register a checkpoint transition if Sgt. Johnson was killed mid-cutscene, locking the player out of the next mission. Post-8/17, the checkpoint transition is decoupled from Sgt. Johnson’s survival state.

When to use ‘None’ vs DLSS / FSR 2 / XeSS

The new ‘None’ Upscaling Technique is not a one-size-fits-all upgrade — it is a clean-image option that trades GPU cost for visual fidelity. Here is when to use each:

  • Use ‘None’ if you have an RTX 4070 / RX 7800 XT (or above) and want the cleanest image at native 1440p / 4K. The campaign is not the most GPU-intensive title in your library — it is a single-player FPS with predictable scene loads — so ‘None’ at 60 fps is achievable on most modern GPUs.
  • Use DLSS Quality if you are on an RTX 30 / 40 / 50 series card and want the cleanest upscaled image. DLSS Quality is roughly 1.5x reconstruction and holds 60 fps at 1440p / 4K on RTX 3060 and above.
  • Use FSR 2 Quality if you are on an AMD RX 6000 / 7000 series card. FSR 2 Quality holds 60 fps at 1440p / 4K on RX 6700 XT and above.
  • Use XeSS Quality if you are on an Intel Arc A770 / A780 or newer. XeSS Quality holds 60 fps at 1440p / 4K on Arc hardware.

Frame Generation — when to keep it on, when to disable

NVIDIA Frame Generation is RTX 40 / 50 series exclusive. It doubles the rendered frame rate by inserting AI-generated frames between the rendered frames, effectively turning 60 fps into ~120 fps. The 8/17 patch made Frame Generation stable across scene loads on RTX 40 / 50 series.

  • Keep Frame Generation On if you are on RTX 4070 / 4080 / 4090 / 5080 / 5090 and your monitor / TV is 120 Hz VRR. The doubling is a genuine uplift.
  • Disable Frame Generation if you notice any frame-pacing inconsistency in the Library mission — the longest interior scene in the campaign and the most likely to expose residual stutter. Frame Generation adds ~10 ms of latency per frame; competitive players who value input latency over frame rate should disable it.

Chromatic Aberration + Film Grain — how to think about it

Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain are both post-processing effects designed to add a cinematic feel to the campaign. Pre-8/17, they were bundled together; post-8/17, they are independent. Here is how to think about each:

  • Chromatic Aberration is the colored fringing around high-contrast edges. It is most visible on Master Chief’s visor against bright skies, on HUD elements against dark backgrounds, and on the edges of Covenant architecture. On high-PPI monitors (27-inch 1440p / 4K), the fringing is most noticeable. On 1080p TVs, the fringing is less visible. Competitive / objective-focused players should disable it; cinematic / first-playthrough players can leave it on.
  • Film Grain is the animated noise overlay that simulates film stock. It is most visible in the dark Library and Truth and Reconciliation interior missions. The grain hides texture pop-in and matches the art team’s reference look. Competitive / objective-focused players should disable it; cinematic / first-playthrough players can leave it on.

The 8/17 patch defaults both to Off for first-time setup. If you want the cinematic look, re-enable both after the first mission.

What did not change in the 8/17 patch

The 8/17 patch is large, but it is not a content-expansion patch. It does not add:

  • New campaign missions beyond the three METEORITE prequel operations. The base campaign’s 11 missions are unchanged.
  • A new difficulty. The Legendary difficulty remains the hardest setting.
  • A new weapon. The base campaign’s weapon set is unchanged; the METEORITE prequel operations add three new weapons (Battle Rifle, Brute Plasma Rifle, Spiker), but they are METEORITE-only.
  • A new enemy type beyond the new Brute variants in METEORITE.
  • A new multiplayer mode. Halo: Campaign Evolved is single-player / co-op only — there is no separate multiplayer mode.
