Apex Legends Getting Started: Season 26, Legend Pick, and Your First 20 Hours

New to Apex Legends in 2026? This guide covers Season 26 changes (Heirloom Shards return), the best legends for new players, the 60-player Battle Royale format, and a 20-hour roadmap that gets you out of Bronze ranked.

TL;DR: Apex Legends Season 26 launched in 2026 with Heirloom Shards returning to every pack. Lifeline is the easiest legend for first-timers (self-heal, drone). The game is 60 players in 3-person squads — you can’t solo. The first 20 hours are Trios → Ranked → Loba/Wraith for rotations.

Who this guide is for

  • You just installed Apex Legends on Steam / EA app / PlayStation / Xbox / Switch
  • You are unsure which legend to pick for your first 20 hours
  • You want to understand the 60-player Battle Royale format
  • You do not need to read this if you already have a Diamond / Master rank

This is the first guide in our zero-to-Diamond Apex Legends series. Read the others in any order:

  1. Core Mechanics: Legends, Weapons, and the Ringcoming soon
  2. Season 26 Patch Notes: What’s New and What Changedcoming soon
  3. Ranked Climbing: From Bronze to Diamondcoming soon

1. The game format: 60-player Battle Royale with squads

Apex Legends is a 3-person squad Battle Royale. 60 players drop into a map, the playable area shrinks, the last team alive wins.

FormatPlayers per squadTotal playersBest for
Trios (default)360Ranked, competitive
Duos260Casual, 2 friends
Solos160New mode (limited rotation)

The unique twist: legends instead of generic operators

Each player picks a Legend with unique abilities. The legends are designed to complement each other in a squad.

The flow of a single match

  1. Drop from the dropship — pick a landing spot
  2. Loot weapons, ammo, shields, abilities, healing
  3. Fight other squads when you meet them
  4. Rotate with the ring — stay inside the safe zone or take damage
  5. Win — be the last squad alive

Common pitfall: trying to play solo. Apex is fundamentally a 3-person team game. Solo play is a limited-time mode. Play with friends or randoms via the “Fill” option.

2. Pick a legend: 25 legends ranked for first-timers

Season 26 has 25 legends (the roster grows each season). Here are the easiest ones to start with.

The “first time” tier

LegendClassDifficultyWhy
LifelineSupport⭐⭐Combat Revive (revive while shooting), healing drone, easy to stay alive
BloodhoundRecon⭐⭐Scan reveals enemies, easy to find fights
BangaloreAssault⭐⭐Smoke + artillery strike, classic FPS kit
GibraltarSupport⭐⭐Shield dome + fortified hitbox, very forgiving

The “intermediate” tier

LegendClassDifficultyWhy
WraithSkirmisher⭐⭐⭐Portals for team rotations, very useful
PathfinderSkirmisher⭐⭐⭐Grappling hook for mobility
OctaneSkirmisher⭐⭐⭐Stim for speed, jump pad for team mobility
LobaSupport⭐⭐⭐Black market for fast looting, ultimate bracelet for escapes

The “advanced” tier (skip for first 20 hours)

LegendClassDifficulty
ValkyrieSkirmisher⭐⭐⭐⭐
HorizonSkirmisher⭐⭐⭐⭐
SeerRecon⭐⭐⭐⭐
CatalystController⭐⭐⭐⭐

The recommendation

  • First 10 hours: Lifeline. Combat Revive is the most forgiving ability in the game — you can revive a teammate while still shooting.
  • After 10 hours: try Bangalore or Bloodhound. They have simpler kits that teach positioning.
  • Skip Wraith, Valkyrie, Horizon for now. They’re strong but require good game sense.

Common pitfall: starting as Wraith because she’s “the most popular legend in Diamond.” She’s popular because good players play her. As a beginner, you won’t use her portals effectively.

3. Season 26 changes: what you need to know

Season 26 launched in 2026 and brought several changes:

The Heirloom Shards return

  • Every pack now has a chance to contain Heirloom Shards (the rarest cosmetic items)
  • Previously, you needed to open 500 packs to get the guaranteed Heirloom
  • Now, you have a chance earlier — but the odds are still very low (~1% per pack)
  • Heirloom Shards unlock a Mythic cosmetic melee weapon for one legend

Other Season 26 changes

  • New legend launch (per usual)
  • Weapon balance changes (specific weapons get buffed / nerfed each season)
  • Ranked split changes
  • Map rotation updates

Common pitfall: chasing Heirloom Shards as a new player. They’re cosmetic. Focus on learning the game first.

4. The 20-hour first-run path

Hours 0–2: Tutorial and Firing Range

  • Play the tutorial — it teaches movement, shooting, looting
  • Spend 30 minutes in the Firing Range — practice with each weapon class
  • Pick your main legend (Lifeline recommended)

Hours 2–5: Trios with Fill

  • Queue into Trios with Fill Team enabled
  • You’ll be matched with 2 random teammates
  • Don’t mute them immediately — pings and callouts help
  • Goal: survive 5 minutes in a match

Hours 5–10: Weapon mastery

  • Pick 2 weapons to master (e.g., R-301 + Mastiff, or VK-47 Flatline + Wingman)
  • Practice them in the Firing Range
  • In real matches, only pick up weapons you know

Hours 10–15: Looting efficiency

  • The biggest new-player mistake is over-looting. Open every box, take everything.
  • Looting efficiency is knowing what to take:
    • Weapons (always)
    • Ammo for your weapons (always)
    • Shield cells / Syringes (always)
    • Helmet / Body Shield (always)
    • Backpack (only if you have inventory space)
    • Optics (only if your weapon has no optic)
    • Grenades (always)

Hours 15–20: First Ranked matches

  • Unlock Ranked by reaching level 50 and winning a few Trios
  • Your placement matches will calibrate you (probably Bronze / Silver)
  • Don’t tilt — placements are noisy

Common pitfall: looting for 4 minutes at the start of a match. 3 minutes max. The ring doesn’t wait for you.**

5. The 10 settings to change in your first hour

Display

SettingRecommendedWhy
Frame rate displayOnFree FPS counter
V-SyncOffAdds input lag
Motion blurOffTrack moving targets better
FOV90–100See more enemies around you

Gameplay

SettingRecommendedWhy
Auto-sprintOffManual sprint gives you control
Auto-pickupLight ammo / Energy ammo / Shield cells onlyDon’t waste time on heavy ammo for SMGs
Crosshair colorHigh-contrast (cyan / yellow)See your crosshair on any background
Damage numbersOnKnow if your shots are hitting
Aim assistOn (console) / Off or low (PC)PC mouse aim is usually better without it

Audio

SettingRecommendedWhy
Master volumeComfortable but leave headroom for footsteps
SFXHighFootstep audio is how you know enemies are nearby
Voice chatPush-to-talkOpen mic in 60-player lobbies is chaos

Common pitfall: leaving audio on default with music. Footstep audio is your most important sense in Apex. Turn music down, SFX up.

6. The 5 basic rules of every match

Rule 1: Don’t drop hot

  • The center of the map has the best loot but the most teams
  • Drop on the edge of the map for your first 10 hours — you’ll loot safely

Rule 2: Don’t over-loot

  • You don’t need every item
  • Loot fast: 3 minutes max per landing spot
  • If you’ve been in one area for 4 minutes, you need to rotate

Rule 3: Don’t peek alone

  • If you see an enemy, ping them and wait for your team
  • Peeking alone is a free kill for the enemy

Rule 4: Stay with your team

  • Never be alone. Solo players die first.
  • If you split up, the enemy will 3v1 each of you in turn

Rule 5: Use your abilities

  • Lifeline’s drone should always be active in a fight
  • Bangalore’s smoke can cover revives
  • Bloodhound’s scan reveals enemies hiding

Common pitfall: treating abilities as “save for later.” They’re not ultimates in Overwatch — they’re tools you use constantly.

7. Frequently asked mistakes (the first week)

8. Next steps

You are ready for your first session. The natural next read is Core Mechanics: Legends, Weapons, and the Ring — once you understand the underlying rules, you’ll climb faster.
