Palworld Getting Started: Servers, First 30 Minutes, and the Settings That Actually Matter
New to Palworld in 2026? This guide covers Steam vs Xbox cross-play, dedicated server options, the first 10 settings to change, and a 30-minute starter routine that gets you to your first Palbox without dying.
TL;DR: Pick Steam (PC) or Xbox / Game Pass — they share cross-play but not cross-save. In your first 30 minutes, build a Primitive Workbench, catch 5 Pals with Palspheres, and place a Palbox before nightfall. Day 1 deaths are almost always from “running past level 15 zones at level 3.”
Who this guide is for
- You just bought Palworld (or are about to) on Steam / Xbox / Game Pass
- You are unsure whether to play solo, co-op, or dedicated server
- You keep dying in the first hour and want a sane first session
- You do not need to read this if you already have a base, 10+ Pals, and have reached level 15
This is the first guide in our zero-to-midgame Palworld series. Read the others in any order:
- Core Mechanics: Pals, Work Suitability, and Combat Basics — coming soon
- Base Building: From Wood Box to Production Line — coming soon
- Breeding & Condenser: How to Get the Pals You Actually Want — coming soon
1. Pick your platform before you pick your server
Palworld runs on three platforms in 2026, and cross-play is on but cross-save is not. Once you start, your save lives on that platform.
| Platform | Cross-play | Cross-save | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | ✅ with Xbox | ❌ | Mouse+KB aim, mods, dedicated server hosting |
| Xbox / Windows Store | ✅ with Steam | ❌ | Console players, Game Pass subscribers |
| Game Pass (PC) | ✅ with Steam | ❌ | Cheapest entry, but runs through Microsoft Store |
Common pitfall: starting on Game Pass because it’s “free,” then wanting to switch to Steam 20 hours in to use a popular mod. You cannot transfer the save. If you think you might mod, start on Steam from day one.
2. Solo, co-op, or dedicated server?
| Mode | Player cap | Best for | Caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo (your world) | 1 | First playthrough, learning at your own pace | You can hire base Pals as NPCs; fully viable |
| Co-op (invite friends) | 4 | Casual play with friends | Host’s world is the canonical save; if host leaves, others get kicked back to lobby |
| Community server | 4–32 | Long-term play with strangers | Rules and rates are set by admin; read them before joining |
| Dedicated server (you host) | 4–32 | Total control, persistent world | You pay for the server 24/7, or run it on your own PC (and leave it on) |
Recommendations:
- First 20 hours: Solo. The game has a strong “discover the world” arc that is best unspoiled.
- Hours 20–80: Co-op with 2–3 friends. Base building is much faster with 4 players dividing tasks.
- Long-term: Community server with 3× rates if you only have 1–2 hours per session.
Common pitfall: joining a “boosted” 10× rates server on day 1. You will out-level every zone before you understand the mechanics, then quit at hour 30 with nothing to show.
3. The 10 settings to change in your first 30 minutes
Don’t try to optimize everything. Change these first; revisit the rest after 10 hours.
Display & Performance
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Rate Limit | Cap at your monitor’s refresh rate | Prevents GPU spikes during Pal raids (40+ entities on screen) |
| V-Sync | Off (use frame limiter) | V-Sync adds input lag. With a 144 Hz monitor, cap at 141 in GPU control panel. |
| Motion Blur | Off | The camera swings wildly during boss fights; motion blur makes tracking worse |
| Render Distance | Medium → High | ”High” looks great but tanks FPS in crowded bases |
Gameplay
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-save interval | Every 5 minutes (not 15) | Mid-boss crashes have happened; 5 min is the sweet spot |
| Pickup range | Expanded | Reduces inventory-tedium massively |
| Auto-equip better gear | On | New players rarely remember to re-equip after crafting |
| Pal interaction pause | Off | When On, the world freezes when you pet a Pal — annoying in combat |
| Show damage numbers | On | Helps you learn which elements counter which Pals |
| Death penalty | Items only (default) | Don’t switch to “delete everything” — it’s a trap for new players |
Common pitfall: leaving death penalty on “delete all items.” You will lose 2 hours of grinding to a surprise Alpha Pal and rage-quit. Default is fine.
4. The first 30 minutes: a scripted starter routine
Don’t wander. Do this on Day 1.
0–5 min: Spawn and tutorial
- Pick the default spawn if it’s your first time (it has guaranteed early-game resources nearby)
- Follow the tutorial up to the point where you can throw a Palsphere
- Open the Technology Tree and unlock the Primitive Workbench (costs 2 Technology Points)
5–10 min: First Pal
- The first Pal you see near spawn is usually a Lamball (sheep) or Cattiva (cat). Catch it with a Palsphere — these throwable capture devices drop from trees
- Equip it via the Palbox / Party screen. You now have one combat Pal
- Catch 2 more — aim for variety. A Pengullet (water), a Foxparks (fire), a Hoocrates (dark) — any elemental spread works
Why 3 different elements? Every element has a weakness and a strength. A 3-Pal party with mixed elements covers you against the first boss, which is an Alpha Daedream (dark).
10–20 min: First base
- Unlock the Palbox in the Technology Tree (very early)
- Place it somewhere flat, near trees, near a water source, and not too close to a high-level zone
- Build the Primitive Workbench next to it
- Build a Berry Plantation (3 seeds, very cheap) and assign 1 Pal with Planting work suitability
20–30 min: First nightfall
- Palworld’s first night is the most lethal moment in the game. Level 3 you vs a level 15 Alpha Pal is not survivable
- Before dark, build a Wooden Chest to stash loot, and a Shoddy Bed for a save point
- When night falls, stay inside your base perimeter. The Pals at night are 3–5 levels higher than daytime
Common pitfall: ignoring the clock, wandering at night, getting one-shot by a Rushoar or Nitewing. The first night is for surviving, not exploring.
5. The first 5 hours: a level-by-level roadmap
| Level range | Goal | Boss to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | Tutorial, first base, 3 Pals | None — just survive the first night |
| 5–10 | Build Primitive Furnace, smelt 50 ingots, expand base | Alpha Cattiva (overworld mini-boss) |
| 10–15 | Unlock High Grade Workbench, craft weapons | Alpha Daedream — first true boss, prepare Dark-type counters |
| 15–20 | First dungeon, first sphere upgrades, first mount (Direhowl / Nitewing) | Sydney, the Alpha Suref |
| 20–25 | Replace starter weapons with metal-tier, expand base to wood → stone | Lily, the Alpha Lyleen |
You don’t need to follow this exactly, but if you find yourself at level 12 with no metal weapons, you’re behind.
6. Frequently asked mistakes (the first week)
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Walking into a level 25 zone at level 4 | One-shot, no warning, all loot dropped where you died | Always check zone level before committing. The HUD shows it on the minimap |
| Ignoring Work Suitability on Pals | Half your base runs idle while you do everything by hand | Check each Pal’s tags — Kindling, Planting, Handiwork, Transporting, Mining, Logging, Medicine Production |
| Capturing every Pal you see | Inventory and Palbox fill up fast; you can’t manage 30 low-tier Pals | Catch 5–8 high-tier Pals you actually want to use, ignore the rest |
| Putting all Pals in the base | Your party becomes empty; you die to a single wild Pal on the road | Always keep 3–5 combat Pals in your active party |
| Skipping the Technology Tree | You craft stone tools at hour 5 when metal tools were available at hour 2 | Spend 1 minute each time you level up to scan the tech tree for cheap unlocks |
7. Co-op etiquette if you join a server
- Don’t take the host’s named Pal. They will be attached. Pick a generic Pal first
- Bring resources, not chaos. If you join a server with established bases, ask before building a second base
- No griefing bases. This sounds obvious; it isn’t. Don’t open chests you didn’t place
- Use the in-game ping (Q by default). It says “I need help” / “enemy here” / “going here”
8. Next steps
You are ready for your first session. The natural next read is Core Mechanics: Pals, Work Suitability, and Combat Basics — it covers the rules (Pal stats, suitability, elemental wheel) that every other guide in this series builds on.
If you already have a base and want to skip to optimization, jump to Base Building: From Wood Box to Production Line.
Version note (2026-07-18): Based on Palworld v0.6.x (“Feybreak” era). Cross-play rules between Steam and Xbox are stable; cross-save is still not supported. Server rate settings, Pal balance, and tech tree costs may be tuned in future patches, but the first 30 minutes flow (Workbench → 3 Pals → Palbox → first night survival) has been stable since launch.
