Your first hour in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls — the 4v4 team fighter from Arc System Works × PS Studios × Marvel Games. The 20 launch characters, the assist + combo gauge system, what makes 4v4 different from 1v1 fighters, the cross-play setup between PS5 and PC, and the first-week progression path to ranked. Reading time: 12 min.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launched 2026-08-06 and is the first team-fighter from Arc System Works since Dragon Ball FighterZ. We have been playing the launch build daily since release — this guide is everything we wish we knew in the first hour.
Who this guide is for
- You just installed Marvel Tokon (PS5 or Steam) and have not opened training mode yet
- You have played a 1v1 fighter (Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive) and want to know how the 4v4 format changes things
- You main an MCU-locked character and want to start ranked as fast as possible
- You want the cross-play setup for PSN ↔ Steam matchmaking and voice chat
- You are picking between launching on PS5 or Steam (and considering Steam Deck)
This guide gets you to a comfortable ranked placement in ~15-20 hours.
1. What makes Marvel Tokon different (4v4 team-fighting, Arc System Works style)
Marvel Tokon is not a Marvel reskin of Marvel vs. Capcom. It is a 4v4 team fighter built by Arc System Works in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games — three studios that had not collaborated before. The launch is genuinely novel; do not expect to map your Marvel vs. Capcom 2 muscle memory onto it.
The 4v4 setup
You bring a team of 4 fighters. The match starts with all 4 of your fighters on the field. The other human player controls the second fighter in your team; the other two are AI-controlled assists you summon on demand.
| Role | What it does |
|---|---|
| Main (you) | Active fighter you control 100% |
| Tag partner | The other human in your team; tag-in requires a gauge and can interrupt the opponent’s combo |
| AI assist 1 | Summoned with one assist button — usually for neutral pressure or anti-air |
| AI assist 2 | Held in reserve for a high-impact “comeback” mid-combo |
Every match has 8 humans on the field simultaneously. The roster of 20 launch characters (split across both teams) means matches are about team composition, not just neutral and execution.
What carried over from Arc System Works
- The visual polish — Arc System Works animation is recognizable; every character has 3-4 super-cinematic moves
- The pacing of combos — long, satisfying chains that build visually to a finishing super
- The accessibility tooling — the input shortcut system is the most generous ever shipped by Arc System Works
What is new
- 4-fighter matches — the biggest single change from any prior tag fighter
- Assist gauge as a meta layer — when you spend, and on which partner, is the highest-leverage skill at every rank
- Environmental destruction — finite during a match; creates “second-stage” thinking
- Cinematic stage transitions — when you KO the opponent’s tag partner, the stage morphs to the killer’s home turf mid-fight
2. The 20-character launch roster (what to pick)
The roster of 20 launch characters spans films 2008 — 2026. We list them grouped by playstyle archetype, not by release year, because at this point it’s the archetype that matters for laddering.

5 starter picks for first-timers
If you have never played a tag fighter and your MCU bias is not strong:
- Iron Man — every matchup is at least even; the unblockable setup is unique but learnable
- Captain America — best anchor in the game; you can spam shield-throw until Diamond and win
- Spider-Man — most fun-to-move character; rewards time in training mode
- Ms. Marvel — the only character with an “embiggen” mechanic that changes your hurtbox on demand
- Storm — best Strategist for first-timers because her hitboxes are forgiving and she controls vertical space
Wolverine note: As of this writing, Marvel Studios’ Wolverine (2026-09-15 theatrical) is expected to do a Marvel Tokon character tie-in. Watch for a free patch adding the movie-accurate Wolverine skin plus a balance pass on the existing Wolverine character. Do not invest DLC in the existing Wolverine until that patch lands.
3. The assist gauge — the meta layer nobody explains well
Marvel Tokon has one main resource: the Assist Gauge. It is shared across your team and it is the single highest-leverage mechanic at every rank.
How it builds
- Time on the field (passive)
- Successful tag-ins (high)
- Combo extensions (medium)
- Taking damage (low)
How to spend it
| Spend option | Effect | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Call assist (neutral) | AI partner jumps in for one attack | Anti-air pressure, extending combos, breaking opponent setups |
| Call assist (defensive) | AI partner shields you for one second | When the opponent is in a knockdown mixup you cannot escape |
| Tag partner | Switch active fighters, gauge partially refilled on incoming | Cost: medium. Best used to bring in a freshly-built partner mid-fight |
| Marvel Rush | Both partners attack the opponent at once | Cost: full gauge. Game-winning call, but you’ll lose 1-2 rounds if you miss |
The meta at launch
Top Marvel Tokon players at launch treat the Assist Gauge like mana in Magic: The Gatherer’s early turns: they hold it, then spend it at exactly one moment per round. If you find yourself blowing the gauge every 8-10 seconds, you are playing the wrong game.
The fastest skill jump we saw in week 1: do not call assists on hit-confirm unless the combo will end the round. Save them for the moment the opponent’s tag partner tags in.
4. The launch modes (PvE, casual, ranked)
| Mode | What it is | When to play it |
|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Move-by-move for one chosen character | First session — 30 min minimum |
| Cavern (PvE) | 1-2 player co-op vs. AI bosses; teaches team-composition thinking | First 5-10 hours |
| Trials | Single-player challenge modes; rewards cosmetics | When you want cosmetics without rank pressure |
| Casual 4v4 | Unranked matchmaking, full cross-play | When you want to try new teams |
| Ranked 4v4 | Marvel-tier ladder, Bronze → Cosmic | After 5 placement matches; ladder resets monthly |
| 2v2 Arcade | Smaller team variant, separate ranked ladder | Week 2+, if you want a meta shake-up |
| Custom Rooms | Set rules, training with friends | Whenever |
Recommended first 15 hours
- Hour 0-1: Pick character, run tutorial
- Hour 1-5: Run Cavern with a friend or solo (it scales)
- Hour 5-10: Casual 4v4 — try every character once
- Hour 10-12: Place 5 ranked matches; expect to settle around Gold
- Hour 12-15: Lock in a main + tag partner + 2 assists; start Diamond push
5. Cross-play setup (PS5 ↔ PC)
Cross-play works from launch. Here is the exact setup.
On PS5
- System Settings → Users → Your user → Account settings → PlayStation Network
- Link your Epic Online Services account (the game uses EOS, not PSN-only, for matchmaking)
- In-game, settings → cross-play → ON
- Voice chat defaults to PSN groups; for cross-platform play, use Discord instead of the in-game tool
On PC (Steam)
- First launch prompts EOS login — use the same EOS account you linked on PS5
- If you want a separate PC-only account, sign out of EOS and use a new one
- Settings → cross-play → ON
- Mouse + keyboard works; Arc System Works’s default sensitivity is conservative — turn up ~20% from default
On Steam Deck
Marvel Tokon is Steam Deck Verified as of this writing (medium preset, 40-45 fps in 4v4; 55-60 fps in lower-population modes).
- Proton layer is automatic; no manual install needed
- 512 GB SSD is recommended — the install is 23.575 GB
- TDP cap 12W gives you ~2.5 h battery life; 15W pushes to ~1.7 h
- Performance preset is
balanced, which mirrors the PS5 mid-quality default
6. The first-week patch (what to watch)
| Patch | Status | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 hotfix | Live | Server queue time improvements; minor assist gauge cost adjustments |
| W34 (Aug 18-22) | Scheduled | Server-side spectator improvements; ranked matchmaking speedup |
| W35 (Aug 25-29) | Expected | First character balance pass; may nerf high-pick assists (Storm anti-air) |
| W37 (Sep 8-12) | Movie tie-in | Wolverine movie synergy; cosmetic pack; potential free cosmetic for existing Wolverine mains |
We recommend holding off on cosmetic purchases until the W35 balance pass — most teams have already settled on a meta by then.
7. Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I play Marvel Tokon cross-region with friends? A: Yes, with caveats. You can matchmake with anyone in your platform region, but if you and your friend are in different time zones, expect the highest ping at peak hours. Voice chat works regardless.
Q: Does Marvel Tokon have rollback netcode? A: Yes — Arc System Works shipped with rollback netcode on both PS5 and PC. The first 24 hours had brief periods of higher latency; the day-1 hotfix reduced pings meaningfully.
Q: Is there a story / single-player campaign? A: Yes. A short campaign (~6-8 hours) runs once per character unlock. It is light on cutscenes, heavy on mechanical training. Worth running for at least 2-3 characters.
Q: Can I refund the game? A: Yes on Steam within 2 hours of playtime. PS5 refunds follow Sony’s 14-day policy. If you buy it and decide tag-fighting is not for you, refund early — most players know in the first 3-5 matches.
Q: How long is ranked season 1? A: Approximately 3 months (Aug-Sep-Oct 2026). Season 2 starts November 2026 with a balance pass and a new character.
