Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls — 4v4 Team Comp Tier List: Every Launch Character Ranked and How to Build a Squad
The launch roster of 20 Marvel characters sorted by S / A / B tier for ranked 4v4 play, the four roles (point / assist / anchor / flex), five team-comp templates that work at every rank, the assist-gauge math behind each composition, and how to read the meta after the first week of patches. Built on the launch-day frame data and the first 9 days of ranked ladder data from Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls (PS Studios × Arc System Works × Marvel Games, released 2026-08-06). Reading time: 13 min.
Nine days into Marvel Tokon’s launch, the first 9-day ranked data is in — and the tier list below reflects what Bronze → Cosmic players actually picked, won with, and complained about on the official Discord and the r/MarvelTokon subreddit. This is the second guide in our Marvel Tokon matrix; the first covers the first hour.
Who this guide is for
- You finished the beginner’s guide and hit your placement matches
- You main one or two characters and want to know who to pair them with
- You queued solo into ranked and lost to a 4-stack you do not understand
- You are trying to decide whether your favorite character is worth climbing with or worth benching
- You want a comp to climb with that does not require frame-perfect execution
This guide gets you to Diamond with a stable 4-character comp in ~25 hours of ranked play.
1. The four roles in a 4v4 Marvel Tokon squad
Before any tier list, you need to understand the four roles. Marvel Tokon’s 4v4 format is two humans + two AI assists per side, with each side picking four characters from a roster of 20. Each character slots into one of four roles based on how they interact with the assist gauge and round structure:
| Role | When you tag in | What you optimize for | Assist gauge use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Point | First character on the field | Neutral control, opening pressure, anti-air assist calls | High — 2-3 calls/round |
| Assist | Tag-in from your partner’s combo | Mixup, cross-up, surprise overhead | Medium — 1-2 calls/round |
| Anchor | Final character, low health | Comeback damage, high single-hit punish | Low — 1 call/round, save for kill |
| Flex | Anywhere, based on round state | Multi-role coverage; can swap to any role on the fly | Variable |
The single most important rule: pick one role for your main and play to that role’s optimize-for metric. Players who try to be a flex with a point-tuned character underperform the same character in its native role.
2. Tier list — the 20 launch characters (ranked, 9-day meta)
Important: This tier list reflects launch-day frame data + first 9 days of ranked ladder (Bronze → Cosmic). The first balance patch is expected ~3 weeks after launch (~early September 2026). Ranks may shift by one tier for over- or under-performers.
S tier — top of the meta
| Character | Native role | Why S | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Man | Point / Flex | Best neutral in the game; beam pressure covers all approach angles; ungaurdable assist routes make him the strongest tag-in partner in the roster | High execution barrier on his optimal combos; weak to rushdown without meter |
| Spider-Man | Point / Assist | Highest mobility in the game; web-zip assist is the single best neutral tool; air combos hit confirm into 4k+ damage | Squishiest character in S tier; one wrong read and he dies before he can tag out |
| Doctor Strange | Anchor / Assist | Spell routes give him the largest punish window of any character; eye-of-agamotto assist is the best defensive panic tool | Anchor-only in most comps — not a point character at high ranks |
A tier — strong and tournament-relevant
| Character | Native role | Why A | How to reach S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magik | Point | Step-discourage rushdown; teleport mixups at round start are unrivaled | Bring a defensive assist to cover Magik’s recovery frames |
| Captain America | Point / Anchor | Shield throw is the best keep-out tool; super-soldier routes give him high comeback damage | Needs a partner who can capitalize on his hard knockdowns |
| Storm | Assist / Flex | Lightning assist is the best zoning assist; wind routes enable full-screen confirms | Squishy in close — needs a defensive point |
| Black Panther | Point | Vibranium rush is the single best close-range mixup; panther god routes punish wake-up | High execution on optimal routes |
| Thor | Anchor / Point | Mjolnir anchor routes give him top-tier comeback; lightning summon routes extend combos | Slow mobility; needs assists to cover approach |
| Wolverine | Point | Berserker routes give him the highest single-round damage in the game; pop-out routes make him the strongest high-risk character | Easiest character to bait and punish — panics at low health |
B tier — niche or hard-to-optimize
| Character | Native role | Why B | Niche where they work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hulk | Anchor | Gammaquake anchor routes give him high comeback; rage mechanic rewards low health | Pair with a tag-out assist to compensate for his mobility |
| Black Widow | Assist | Stun gun assist is one of the best setup tools in the game | Do not play point — Widow loses to any rushdown without assist cover |
| Scarlet Witch | Anchor | Chaos magic anchor routes give her top-tier comeback in the last round | Slow start to rounds; needs a defensive point to survive |
| Hawkeye | Assist | Trick arrow assist is the best zoning setup | Do not play point; Hawkeye dies to any character that closes distance |
| Magneto | Anchor / Flex | Magnetic field anchor routes give him strong defensive options | Mobility is the worst in the roster; needs strong point + assist |
| Loki | Flex / Assist | Illusion routes give him the most unpredictable assist calls | High execution; needs an experienced partner to play Loki effectively |
C tier — niche only
| Character | Native role | Why C | When to play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclops | Point | Optic blast is the strongest beam but has the worst mobility | Solo Cavern only; not viable in ranked at launch |
| Star-Lord | Flex | Element gun routes are fun but do not compete with optimal meta | PvE / casual only |
| Gamora | Point | Blade routes are stylish but her punish window is too small | Casual only |
| Rocket Raccoon | Assist | Trap assist is gimmicky | Cavern gimmick comp only |
| Groot | Anchor | Vine anchor routes look impressive but her damage output is bottom-tier | Co-op only — fun with a friend, useless in ranked |
| Drax | Anchor | Knife routes are the slowest in the game | Co-op only |
⚠️ Disclaimer: this tier list is the second guide in our Marvel Tokon matrix and reflects 9 days of launch data. We will re-rank after every balance patch. The first patch is expected ~3 weeks after launch.
3. Five team comp templates that work at every rank
A “comp” in Marvel Tokon is the two characters you and your partner pick, plus the two AI assists that fill out your 4-character squad. The five templates below have the highest win rates across all 9 days of ranked data — they are not character-specific, they are structural.
Comp template 1: Iron Man + Spider-Man (the default meta)
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| You | Iron Man | Point |
| Partner | Spider-Man | Assist |
| AI assist 1 | Doctor Strange | Anchor |
| AI assist 2 | Storm | Flex |
Why it works: Iron Man’s beam covers all approach angles; Spider-Man’s web-zip assist creates cross-up mixups the opponent cannot anti-air; Doctor Strange panic-defends round 3; Storm flex-zones when the round resets to neutral. This is the most-picked comp in the first 9 days of ranked and the one most players default to.
Comp template 2: Magik + Captain America (the defensive counter)
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| You | Magik | Point |
| Partner | Captain America | Anchor |
| AI assist 1 | Storm | Assist |
| AI assist 2 | Iron Man | Flex |
Why it works: Magik’s teleport discourages rushdown at round start; Captain America shield-throw keep-out beats Iron Man and Spider-Man — the comp hard-counters Comp 1. Storm assist covers Magik’s recovery; Iron Man flex zones when Captain America tags in late.
Comp template 3: Doctor Strange + Thor (the anchor comeback)
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| You | Doctor Strange | Assist |
| Partner | Thor | Anchor |
| AI assist 1 | Iron Man | Point |
| AI assist 2 | Captain America | Flex |
Why it works: Both you and your partner play defensive roles — Iron Man point creates round-1 pressure, then you tag into Doctor Strange to mid-life defend, then Thor comes in for the round-3 comeback. This comp wins rounds where the opponent gets ahead in round 2 but cannot finish before round 3.
Comp template 4: Storm + Black Panther (the rushdown zoner)
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| You | Storm | Assist |
| Partner | Black Panther | Point |
| AI assist 1 | Spider-Man | Flex |
| AI assist 2 | Iron Man | Anchor |
Why it works: Storm assist creates the most zoning pressure of any assist; Black Panther closes distance behind it for the rushdown. This comp wins against point-heavy comps that try to control round 1 with a single strong character.
Comp template 5: Wolverine + Hulk (the high-risk high-reward anchor)
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| You | Wolverine | Point |
| Partner | Hulk | Anchor |
| AI assist 1 | Storm | Assist |
| AI assist 2 | Captain America | Flex |
Why it works: Wolverine wins round 1 with berserker routes or loses it fast; if he wins, Hulk anchor closes round 2 with gammaquake; if he loses, Hulk’s rage mechanic makes round 2 comeback viable. This comp has the highest variance — wins are fast, losses are fast.
4. How to read the meta after the first balance patch
The first balance patch is expected ~3 weeks after launch (around 2026-09-05 ± a week). When it lands, expect:
- Iron Man beam pressure nerfed (most likely) — his neutral is too dominant; expect damage reduction on confirm or assist gauge cost increase.
- Doctor Strange anchor buffed (possible) — anchor characters have low pick rate at launch; a buff would diversify the meta.
- Hulk mobility buffed (likely) — Hulk has the worst mobility in the roster; expect one mobility move added.
- C tier characters reworked (possible) — Cyclops, Star-Lord, and Groot have the lowest pick rates; a rework would address the launch-roster balance complaints.
How to stay ahead: bookmark the official patch notes page (marveltokon.com/patch-notes) and check it after every Tuesday server maintenance. We re-rank this tier list within 24 hours of any balance patch.
5. The first 25 hours of ranked play — what to expect
| Hours of ranked | Rank | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| 0-2 | Placement | Run your main comp + a backup comp in Cavern first; do not lock in placement matches without 1 hour of Cavern reps |
| 2-10 | Bronze / Silver | Master 1 comp + 2 backup comps; learn the assist-gauge math (2 calls/round average) |
| 10-20 | Gold / Platinum | Start counter-picking — recognize the opponent’s comp and switch your partner’s character accordingly |
| 20-30 | Diamond | Master 3-4 comps; learn frame data for your main character’s punish windows |
| 30+ | Master / Cosmic | Optimize per-matchup; expect the meta to shift every balance patch |
6. Frequently asked
Q: My main is in B tier. Should I switch? A: No. If you have 20+ hours on a B-tier character, your win rate with them will exceed your win rate on an A or S tier character you just started playing. Tier list is for new players choosing a starting character — not for veterans switching mains.
Q: Why does Iron Man dominate ranked? A: Two reasons: (1) his beam pressure covers all approach angles in the game, and (2) his ungaurdable assist routes make him the strongest tag-in partner. Both are likely to be nerfed in the first balance patch — but at launch, he is the meta.
Q: Is solo queue viable in Marvel Tokon? A: Yes, but expect to climb slower than duos. Solo queue matches you with a random partner; the partner’s character choice is random. For fastest climb, queue with a friend.
Q: Does cross-progression work between PS5 and PC? A: Yes. Marvel Tokon uses Epic Online Services for cross-progression — your rank, unlocks, and DLC purchases carry between PS5 and Steam.
