Steam Deck SSD Upgrade: Form Factor, Drive Picks, Cloning & Recovery Image (2026)

Internal SSD upgrade for Steam Deck LCD and OLED — 2230 single-slot, Valve's verified 2TB support on OLED, drive picks (WD SN740, Sabrent Rocket 2230, SN770M 2TB), and a step-by-step Clonezilla + Valve recovery image workflow.

The first-time setup guide §6 covers the microSD card slot. This guide covers the internal M.2 SSD — a different, more permanent upgrade. Read the parent guide first if you haven’t; this assumes you’ve already set up the Deck and are now considering whether to open the case.

Upgrading the Steam Deck SSD is the single biggest practical improvement you can make to the device if you picked the 256 GB base model. Load times for large AAA games drop from ~45 seconds on microSD to ~12 seconds on internal NVMe. Going from 64 GB / 256 GB to 1 TB / 2 TB also ends the constant uninstall-reinstall cycle.

Why upgrade the internal SSD?

The Steam Deck has two storage surfaces: microSD (slow, easy, swap anytime) and internal SSD (fast, requires opening the case). microSD is fine for back-catalogue indie games and titles you play occasionally. Internal NVMe is for the games you actually play a lot and the AAA titles that hammer load times.

If you mostly play indie games, microSD is fine. If you install AAA titles frequently, the SSD upgrade is one of the best dollars you can spend on the device.

1. Form-factor reality — what fits

1.1 Both LCD and OLED: M.2 2230 single-slot only

The Steam Deck’s M.2 slot is 22 mm × 30 mm (2230) — the small form factor, not the desktop-standard 2280. Confirmed across iFixit teardowns of both LCD and OLED revisions.

Single-slot: there is only one M.2 socket on the board. You cannot add a second drive; this is a swap, not an add.

Single-sided drives only — the SSD slot has a thermal pad / shield on top with very little vertical clearance. Double-sided drives physically will not seat. Even if it fits the slot, the top side hits the shielding.

Single-sided 2230 only

Double-sided drives physically will not fit inside the Deck's M.2 shield. Buy a single-sided drive. The WD SN740, Sabrent Rocket 2230, and Kingston OM3P lines are all single-sided — those are the safe picks.

1.2 LCD Steam Deck (2022): 1 TB is the de facto max

Valve’s official guidance for the LCD model capped at 1 TB. The widely-shipped reference drive is the WD SN740 1 TB — the same model Valve uses internally for the 1 TB LCD SKU.

2 TB drives have historically been unreliable on LCD because of firmware maturity and thermal headroom. Community reports of 2 TB on LCD are mixed. Recommended LCD ceiling: 1 TB. Stick with the SN740 1 TB or Sabrent Rocket 2230 1 TB.

1.3 OLED Steam Deck (2023+): 2 TB officially verified

Valve updated the OLED’s M.2 slot specs and BIOS to officially support 2 TB drives after the model launched. Verified 2 TB options as of mid-2026:

  • WD SN770M 2 TB — TLC NAND, PCIe Gen 4, low idle power.
  • Sabrent Rocket 2230 2 TB — Phison E21T controller, slightly faster sustained writes than SN770M but runs a few °C warmer.

Both are within Valve’s verified spec for OLED. Lower-capacity OLED drives (512 GB, 1 TB) also work — same 2230 form factor as LCD.

1.4 Drives larger than 2 TB

Drives larger than 2 TB sometimes enumerate as 0 or wrong-size in the Deck’s UEFI. This is the reason Valve caps official support at 2 TB. Don’t buy 4 TB drives for the Deck — they’re outside verified spec and community results are unreliable.

2.3 Drives to avoid

  • Anything larger than 2 TB — outside Valve’s verified spec; the Deck’s UEFI may not enumerate them.
  • Cheap no-name 2230 drives from marketplace sellers — counterfeits are common, endurance is unknown, warranty is fictional.
  • Double-sided drives — physically will not seat in the Deck’s shield.
  • Drives with large DRAM caches that run hot — the Deck has limited thermal headroom; passive-cooled SSDs live or die on idle temps.

2 TB on LCD works for some users and not others — Valve's verified spec is OLED only. If you have an LCD Deck, spend the money on a known-good 1 TB drive (SN740 or Sabrent Rocket 2230) rather than chasing 2 TB firmware compatibility.

Open the Deck on a non-carpeted surface

The SSD is sensitive to electrostatic discharge. A wool sweater on a carpet in winter is the classic way to fry an M.2. Ground yourself by touching a metal object before handling the new drive.

4. Backing up before you open the case

4.1 Save data (mandatory)

In Game Mode:

  1. Steam → Settings → Cloud → Enable Steam Cloud and click Synchronize.
  2. Verify recent saves appear in the cloud for every game you care about. Library → right-click a game → Properties → General → “Always show this game in the cloud sync status” if you want to confirm.

In Desktop Mode:

  • For any non-cloud-synced games, copy ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/<game>/<saves_folder> to a backup drive. Most modern games sync saves to the cloud; only older or DRM-protected indie titles need this step.

4.2 Screenshots and videos

Desktop Mode → File ManagerPictures and Videos folders → copy to a USB stick or external SSD. Captures aren’t cloud-synced by default.

4.3 Installed game files (not needed to back up)

You can re-download from Steam. Saves are in the cloud. Non-Steam games (Epic, GOG via Heroic, emulators) will need a list of what you installed — write it down or screenshot the app list.

5. Method A — Clonezilla (full disk clone)

When to use: you want the new SSD to be a byte-for-byte copy of the old SSD, with all your installed games, settings, and SteamOS partition intact. Best for: simple swap on a working Deck.

5.1 Boot Clonezilla from USB

  1. On your second computer, download the Clonezilla live ISO from clonezilla.org/downloads.
  2. Flash to a USB stick with Rufus (Windows) or balenaEtcher (cross-platform).
  3. Plug the Clonezilla USB into the Deck and boot from USB: hold Volume Down + press Power → Boot Manager → pick the USB stick.

5.2 Connect both drives

The old (internal) SSD is /dev/nvme0n1. The new SSD goes into a USB-to-M.2-2230 enclosure, which appears as /dev/sda (or similar — confirm in Clonezilla’s disk list).

Both drives need to be visible to Clonezilla. If your enclosure isn’t being recognized, try a different enclosure or a USB-A-to-M.2 adapter.

5.3 Run the disk-to-local-disk wizard

In Clonezilla:

  1. device-imagedevice-devicedisk-to-local-disk (beginner mode).
  2. Source: /dev/nvme0n1 (the internal Deck SSD, in the slot).
  3. Target: /dev/sda (the new SSD, in your enclosure).
  4. Confirm. Clonezilla copies partition table + all partitions (EFI + SteamOS + home). Takes 15–30 minutes for a 1 TB drive.

5.4 Swap the drive

  1. Power down the Deck completely.
  2. Remove the 8 screws from the back cover (PH0). Store them in a magnetic tray.
  3. Use a plastic pry tool to separate the back cover. Start near the grips and work around the perimeter. Plastic clips hold the cover; don’t yank.
  4. The M.2 slot is under a small metal shield held by one PH0 screw. Remove the screw and lift the shield.
  5. The old SSD pops out at ~30° angle. Pull it out.
  6. Seat the new SSD at the same angle, push flat, screw the shield back.
  7. Replace the back cover; 8 screws; even torque.

5.5 First boot

Power on. SteamOS detects the new SSD and boots normally. Verify:

  • Settings → System → Storage shows the new full capacity.
  • Library shows installed games (they’re in the cloud metadata; the install files are on the new SSD).
  • A few recent saves load correctly (especially any cloud-synced game — should “just work”).
Clonezilla preserves your installed library

A 1 TB clone saves 5+ hours of Steam re-downloads. The Clonezilla path is the right pick when the old Deck was working well and you want everything to look identical on the new drive.

6. Method B — Valve recovery image (clean install)

When to use: smaller source drive than target (e.g., 256 GB → 1 TB or 2 TB), old Deck with weird bugs you want to clear out, Clonezilla gave you a UEFI hiccup, or you want the cleanest possible SteamOS install.

6.1 Download the recovery image

Valve’s official SteamOS recovery image (~5 GB ISO) lives at . Pick the LCD or OLED variant. Make sure you pick the right one — the images are hardware-specific.

6.2 Flash to USB stick

Use Raspberry Pi Imager (cross-platform, free) or balenaEtcher. Both handle large ISOs reliably. A weird-flashed USB stick is the most common “recovery image won’t boot” cause; re-flash with one of those if it doesn’t boot.

6.3 Boot from USB

Same as Clonezilla: hold Volume Down + Power → Boot Manager → pick the USB stick.

6.4 Restore onto the new SSD

The recovery image boots a stripped-down SteamOS. The wizard detects the internal SSD and offers “Restore SteamOS”. Confirm. ~10 minutes.

6.5 First boot after restore

You go through OOBE again: language, Wi-Fi, Steam login. Then:

  1. Verify storage capacity — Settings → System → Storage shows the new full capacity.
  2. Re-download your games — the library remembers your purchases; click Install on each. Saves restore from Steam Cloud.
  3. Reinstall any non-Steam apps — Heroic (Epic, GOG), emulators, etc.
  4. Re-install Decky Loader — see Decky Loader guide. The recovery image wipes /home/deck/homebrew/.
Recovery image is the cleanest path for a stale Deck

If your Deck has been acting weird for months — slow boots, dropped controller pairing, weird suspend bugs — the recovery image wipes years of accumulated cruft. Worth it even without an SSD upgrade.

Rule of thumb: same capacity or larger, healthy Deck → Method A. Smaller source, weird bugs → Method B.

8. Post-clone first-boot checklist

  1. SteamOS boots correctly — should land in Game Mode within 30 seconds.
  2. Storage capacity correct — Settings → System → Storage shows full new capacity.
  3. Wi-Fi connects — sign into Steam; library syncs.
  4. 30-minute gaming test — Helldivers 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3 to verify load times and shader cache work.
  5. Re-pair controllers — Bluetooth-paired devices sometimes lose pairing after a fresh install.

Even Clonezilla can fail. A power loss mid-clone is unrecoverable. Verify your cloud-save sync status BEFORE you crack open the Deck. For non-cloud games, copy saves to USB manually.

10. Frequently asked questions

Will upgrading void my warranty?

Valve does not endorse self-service SSD swaps but does not void warranty for it. The back-cover screws are Torx-style and not tamper-evident. Risk: damaging the board during the swap can void warranty. If unsure, use a Valve-authorized repair center.

Can I keep my old SSD as an external drive?

Yes. With a USB-to-M.2-2230 enclosure ($10–$15), the old SSD becomes a portable drive. Useful for archival or for building a retro emulator drive.

Does the OLED’s larger battery offset any of the SSD upgrade cost?

Unrelated. Battery is 50 Wh on both 1 TB and 512 GB OLED SKUs. Only the SSD capacity differs by SKU.

Should I upgrade SSD or just buy a bigger microSD?

microSD is fine for back-catalogue and small indie games. SSD upgrade makes sense if you install AAA titles frequently and care about load times, or if the base 256 GB is filling up.
