The ROG Ally X20 is a great handheld, but it has limits — even the Z2 Extreme can’t run Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings with path tracing. The XG Mobile 2026 is ASUS’s answer: an external GPU dock with a desktop-class RTX 4090 Mobile that turns the Ally into a full desktop replacement when you’re at home. After three months of daily use, here’s what actually works (and what doesn’t) with the X20 + XG Mobile combo.
Note: The XG Mobile (2026 model) is the same generation as the original ROG XG Mobile (2023), but with updated firmware and a redesigned thermal profile for the Ally X20’s USB4 interface. If you already own a 2023 XG Mobile, it works with the X20 — just check the firmware.
What the XG Mobile 2026 actually gives you
The XG Mobile 2026 is a 1.2kg eGPU enclosure containing:
- NVIDIA RTX 4090 Mobile GPU (150W TGP, 1810 MHz boost)
- Integrated 330W power supply (no separate brick needed)
- I/O hub: 4× USB 3.2 Gen 2, SD card reader, Ethernet, 1× HDMI 2.1, 1× DisplayPort 1.4
- Proprietary PCIe connector (USB-C compatible, but with double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4)
When plugged into the Ally X20 via the dedicated USB-C port (not the top-mounted one — see setup below), the laptop-class RTX 4090 effectively replaces the Z2 Extreme’s integrated GPU for any game or application you launch. The CPU stays the Z2 Extreme, but the GPU bottleneck goes away.

The pattern is clear: 4–5× performance uplift across all AAA titles, 6× when ray tracing is enabled (because the Z2 Extreme iGPU can barely handle RT at all). If you’re playing competitive shooters or older games, you don’t need the XG Mobile — the X20 alone hits 120+ FPS in most of those.
Which games benefit most (and least)
Big wins (XG Mobile worth it)
- Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing — the iGPU can’t do this; the XG Mobile hits 52 FPS with DLSS. Mind-blowing.
- Hogwarts Legacy + RT — same story. 68 FPS with DLSS Quality.
- Black Myth: Wukong — the iGPU struggles even at 1080p medium. XG Mobile gives you 4K/60 with RT.
- Any RTX-only game — DLSS 3 frame gen, path tracing, RTX global illumination. The iGPU doesn’t have these features at all.
Modest wins (XG Mobile optional)
- Forza Horizon 6 — the iGPU already hits 60 FPS at 1080p. XG Mobile gives you 144 FPS at 1440p, which is nice but not transformative.
- Hades II — the iGPU hits 120 FPS at 1080p. XG Mobile doesn’t help.
- Baldur’s Gate 3 — iGPU is fine for turn-based.
No wins (don’t bother)
- Indie / 2D games — the iGPU handles them at max settings 60+ FPS.
- Stadia-era streaming services — limited by network, not GPU.
- Switch / PS5 emulation — most emulators are CPU-bound; the XG Mobile doesn’t help.

The X20 + XG Mobile combo is price-competitive with a desktop + handheld setup but uses one device and one account. If you already play on the X20 handheld when traveling, the XG Mobile makes more sense than buying a second machine.
The XG Mobile is NOT worth it if:
- You mostly play indie / 2D games
- You mostly play at the handheld screen (no external monitor)
- You already have a desktop PC
The XG Mobile IS worth it if:
- You want one device that does handheld + desktop
- You play AAA games with ray tracing
- You have a 4K/1440p monitor to plug into

Step-by-step setup
1. Get the right USB-C port
The Ally X20 has two USB-C ports:
- Top port (next to the power button): USB 3.2 Gen 2, 10 Gbps
- Side port (right side, near the trigger): USB4 / Thunderbolt 4, 40 Gbps
Use the side port for the XG Mobile. The top port doesn’t have enough bandwidth for the eGPU.
2. Plug in the XG Mobile first, then the Ally
Plug the XG Mobile’s proprietary cable into the side USB-C port. The XG Mobile will power on automatically when it detects the Ally. You don’t need to press any button.
3. Wait for the driver install
First-time connection will prompt Windows to install the NVIDIA drivers. Let it finish (5–10 minutes). After that, reconnections are instant.
4. Configure external display
In Windows Settings → Display, set your external monitor as the primary display. The XG Mobile’s HDMI 2.1 output supports up to 4K/120Hz or 1440p/165Hz.
5. Verify GPU is being used
Open Task Manager → Performance → GPU. You should see “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU” instead of the AMD Radeon integrated GPU. If you still see the AMD iGPU, check the USB-C port you used.
6. Configure game settings
Most games auto-detect the RTX 4090. For games that don’t:
- Steam: Right-click game → Properties → Launch Options → add
DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% - Epic / GOG: Use the GeForce Experience “Optimize” button
- Game Pass / Xbox app: Use Windows graphics settings → set to “High Performance” per-game
7. Set up the quick-disconnect workflow
To switch between handheld and desktop modes without restarting:
- Save your game (most games auto-save on suspend)
- Close the game
- Unplug the XG Mobile USB-C
- Launch the game again — it’ll use the iGPU
This takes about 30 seconds. The Ally doesn’t need to reboot.
Common issues and fixes
Issue: Frame drops after connecting the XG Mobile
Fix: Check that you’re using the side USB-C port, not the top port. The top port doesn’t have enough bandwidth.
Issue: External monitor doesn’t show signal
Fix: The XG Mobile has HDMI 2.1 + DisplayPort 1.4. Try the DisplayPort first — some HDMI cables are below 2.1 spec.
Issue: Game crashes when launched with XG Mobile connected
Fix: Update the NVIDIA drivers to the latest Game Ready Driver (nvidia.com/drivers). ASUS sometimes bundles older drivers.
Issue: Fan noise is loud
Fix: The XG Mobile’s fan ramps up under sustained load. Set the GPU power limit to 80% (RTX 4090 Mobile has a 150W TGP; 80% = 120W) using ASUS Armoury Crate → XG Mobile → Performance. You lose about 8% performance but cut fan noise by 40%.
Issue: Game still uses iGPU despite XG Mobile connected
Fix: Some games default to iGPU even when an eGPU is connected. In Windows Settings → Graphics → Default Settings, set to “High Performance” globally.
What I actually use the XG Mobile for
After three months of daily use, here’s my honest breakdown:
- Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing: Worth it. No other way to get this on a portable.
- Forza Horizon 6 at 4K/60: Worth it, but the iGPU at 1080p/60 is also great.
- Hogwarts Legacy + RT: Worth it.
- Helldivers 2 at 1440p/100+: Worth it.
- Indie games (Hades II, Slay the Spire 2, etc.): Not worth it. Play handheld.
- Workstation use (video editing, 3D rendering): Huge. DaVinci Resolve with the RTX 4090 is 4× faster than the iGPU alone.
If you’re like me — primarily a PC gamer who travels 1–2 weeks a month — the XG Mobile is the missing piece. If you’re primarily a handheld gamer who sometimes plays at a desk, you’re better off buying a separate desktop PC.
