Dark Souls 3 Beginner Guide: Best Class, Early Weapons, and Boss Route
New to Dark Souls 3? Best starting class, gift pick, early weapons that carry you, Estus splits, full boss route order, NPC quests, and the most common beginner mistakes — all in one guide.
TL;DR: Pick Knight for your first character — best starting gear, a shield that blocks everything, and a straight sword that scales to endgame. Take Fire Gem as your starting gift (or Life Ring if caster). Pump Vigor first, then Endurance, then your weapon stat. Follow the boss route in intended order below and you’ll finish the base game in 25–35 hours. The two DLCs, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City, are post-game content.
Who this guide is for
You just bought Dark Souls 3 — or tried DS1 / Elden Ring and bounced off. You want a sane first 30 hours without spoilers, without obscure builds, and without dying to a boss because someone online told you to “git gud.”
DS3 is a 2016 game with stable, well-documented content. Nothing here invents a 2026 patch or DLC.
The single most important mindset shift: death is the teaching mechanic. When you die, the game tells you exactly where you failed. Read the death recap, learn the move, try again with one new plan. Almost every “impossible” boss becomes easy after 4–6 honest attempts.
This is the first guide in our Souls-like beginner series:
- Diablo 4 Getting Started — for ARPG fans comparing souls-like to Diablo pacing
- Path of Exile 2 Getting Started — for players who like deep build crafting
- Subnautica 2 Beginner’s Walkthrough — for the chill couch game between boss runs
- Steam Deck Getting Started — DS3 runs beautifully on Steam Deck at 40–60 fps
1. Best starting class for beginners
DS3 has 10 classes. They only set starting stats and gear — at soul level 40+ the differences mostly wash out. For your first character, starting gear matters.
| Class | SL | Vig | End | Str | Dex | Fai | Int | Starting gear | Beginner verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knight | 9 | 12 | 11 | 13 | 12 | 9 | 9 | Long Sword + Iron Round Shield + Heavy Armor | Best default. Tanky, blocks everything |
| Pyromancer | 8 | 11 | 10 | 12 | 9 | 14 | 10 | Hand Axe + Pyromancy Flame | Best ranged option. Fireball trivializes early fights |
| Mercenary | 8 | 11 | 11 | 12 | 15 | 8 | 10 | Scimitar + Buckler | Strong lean-Dex pick |
| Herald | 9 | 12 | 9 | 12 | 12 | 14 | 9 | Mace + Iron Shield | Fai-leaning tank |
| Warrior | 7 | 14 | 9 | 16 | 9 | 9 | 11 | Battle Axe + Small Shield | High Str — needs more levels |
| Assassin | 10 | 10 | 13 | 10 | 14 | 10 | 11 | Bandit’s Knife + Caestus | Critical-focused, awkward early |
| Thief | 5 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 13 | 8 | 10 | Bandit’s Knife + Short Bow | Squishy DPS |
| Sorcerer | 6 | 8 | 9 | 7 | 12 | 8 | 15 | Shortsword + Sorcerer’s Staff | Glass cannon ranged |
| Cleric | 7 | 10 | 8 | 12 | 8 | 14 | 7 | Mace + Talisman | Healer role, slow start |
| Deprived | 1 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | Club + Broken Sword | Challenge run. Don’t start here. |
Recommendation:
- First-ever Souls character: Knight. The Long Sword + Iron Round Shield combo blocks every attack in the first three areas, the heavy armor lets you survive mis-rolls, and the Long Sword is one of the best weapons for the entire base game.
- Want a ranged option? Pyromancer. The Pyromancy Flame casts Fireball with no attunement. That single spell trivializes the Curse-Rotted Greatwood and several mid-game ambushes.
- Skip Deprived unless doing a SL1 challenge. Skip Thief and Sorcerer as a first character — squishiness is brutal when you don’t yet know enemy moves.
Class is not a build lock. Respecs are infinite once you unlock the Firelink equipment box. Pick whatever feels fun; nothing in the first 10 hours is irrevocable.
2. Starting gift: Fire Gem or Life Ring
The two gifts that matter:
- Fire Gem — Casts Fireball once, no attunement. Melee characters (Knight, Mercenary, Herald, etc.) should take this for a panic ranged option.
- Life Ring — +10% max HP, stackable later. Casters (Pyromancer, Sorcerer, Cleric) already have ranged tools; the HP boost is more useful.
- Other gifts (Divine Blessing, Black Firebomb, Young White Branch, Rusted Coin) are skip-worthy on a first run.
3. Stats explained and leveling priority by soul level
The fix to “I have 12 in everything and am weak everywhere” is brutal priority:
- Vigor (#1, always) — Max HP. The real difficulty slider.
- Endurance (#2) — Stamina + equip load. Gates every attack, dodge, and block.
- Vitality — Equip load + poise. See §4.
- Strength / Dex — Meet weapon requirements, then level only if you use heavy / dex weapons.
- Attunement — Spell slots. Only if casting.
- Faith / Intelligence — Magic scaling. Only if casting.
- Luck — Item discovery, bleed. Ignore on first run.
Leveling priority by soul level
| Soul level | Target Vigor | Target Endurance | Spend points on |
|---|---|---|---|
| SL 1–30 | 20 → 25 | 15–20 | Vigor only |
| SL 30–60 | 27 | 20–25 | Vigor → weapon requirements → Endurance to 25 |
| SL 60–90 | 30+ (soft cap) | 25–30 | Vigor → Endurance cap → weapon stat scaling |
| SL 90–120 | 35+ (hard cap) | 30+ | Final Vigor push if you still get one-shot |
Vigor has a soft cap at 27 and a hard cap at 50. Below 20 Vigor, almost every boss one-shots you. Between 27 and 40, you survive 2–3 hits and the entire game opens up.
4. Equip load and roll types — fat-rolling ruins the game
| Equip load % | Roll type | i-frames |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30% | Fast roll | 11 frames |
| 30%–70% | Medium roll | 11 frames |
| 70%–100% | Fat roll | Only 6 frames |
| Over 100% | Cannot fast travel | — |
The 30% threshold is the single most important number in the entire game. Drop below 30% and your rolls are long, fast, and forgiving. Stay above 70% and your rolls are pathetic little hops that get you hit.
How to stay under 30%: wear the Knight starting armor (fine on a Knight because Vit 15 lets you afford it), don’t pick up heavy weapons and equip both shield AND four new armor pieces at once, and remember that two-handing a weapon gives a 1.5× strength bonus and removes shield weight.
Common pitfall: thinking armor is the main defense. Dodging is defense. A medium roll in light armor beats a fat roll in heavy armor every time.
5. Early weapons that carry a beginner
Upgrade ONE weapon and only ONE. Titanite is scarce early — spreading it across three weapons leaves all three weak. Every weapon here clears the base game:
| Weapon | Type | Where to get it | Str / Dex req | Why it’s good |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long Sword | Straight sword | Knight starting gear | 10 / 10 | The benchmark. Fast, great range, scales to endgame |
| Broadsword | Straight sword | Drop from Lothric Knights (High Wall) | 10 / 10 | Slightly higher AR than Long Sword |
| Astora Greatsword | Straight sword (great-class) | Foot of the High Wall bonfire, on a corpse | 16 / 18 | Massive AR for low stat cost |
| Uchigatana | Katana | Drop from swordmaster NPCs or buy from Handmaid | 11 / 16 | Bleed procs, fantastic Dex scaling |
| Dark Sword | Straight sword | Drop from swordmaster NPC outside Firelink | 16 / 13 | Highest base AR of any straight sword |
| Lothric Knight Sword | Straight sword | Lothric Knights in Lothric Castle (late) | 14 / 14 | Great thrusting R2 reward for late-game |
Do not kill the swordmaster NPC in the High Wall of Lothric without thinking. He drops the Dark Sword + a Twinkling Titanite + armor, but his quest also unlocks NPC lines later. If you must, kill him and return later via the cellar.
The Refined Gem trick
Once you reach the Road of Sacrifices, find Blacksmith Andre at Firelink. Give him a Refined Gem (dropped by Road of Sacrifices NPCs) and any +3 straight sword to get a Refined infusion — straight swords with Refined infusion scale with BOTH Str and Dex. A Refined Long Sword at +5 with 30/30 hits harder than any other straight sword.
The single most important tip of the entire guide: upgrade ONE weapon.
Common pitfall: holding L1 (block) the entire fight. Stamina drains, you get guard-broken. Block only when you know the attack is coming. Dodge the rest.
6. Estus allocation — Estus vs Ashen Estus
At every bonfire, the Fire Keeper lets you split your Estus Flask:
- Estus Flask (yellow) — heals HP. Your bread and butter.
- Ashen Estus Flask (blue) — restores FP. Only if you cast.
| Build | Estus split | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pure melee (Knight, Mercenary, Warrior) | +10 Estus / +0 Ashen | You don’t use FP. Every charge should be a heal. |
| Caster (Pyromancer, Sorcerer, Cleric) | +6 / +4 | 4 Ashen charges cover one full spell rotation |
| Hybrid | +8 / +2 | 2 Ashen charges covers Fireball / Great Heal burst |
You unlock up to +15 total charges by finding Estus Shards (raises number) and Undead Bone Shards (raises per-charge potency). On a first run you’ll find ~10–13 of each by Soul of Cinder.
Common pitfall: forgetting to upgrade Estus. Most Firelinks have a Fire Keeper sitting right next to the bonfire. Talk to her every time you find a shard. +5 vs +10 Estus is the difference between a 3-attempt boss and a 1-attempt boss.
7. Boss route in intended order
Follow this order. Going out of order is the #1 cause of “I am stuck on a boss way too early.”
| # | Boss | Area | Rec. SL | One-line strategy | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Iudex Gundyr | Cemetery of Ash | 10–15 | Hit him 2x, dodge his grab. Phase 2 — run until cutscene ends. | Easy |
| 2 | Vordt of the Boreal Valley | High Wall of Lothric | 15–20 | Stay in front. Dodge the head-sweep. Punish frost-breath. | Easy |
| 3 | Curse-Rotted Greatwood (optional) | Undead Settlement | 15–25 | Hit the orange sacs on legs and back. | Easy |
| 4 | Crystal Sage | Road of Sacrifices | 20–25 | Kill the main sage, then chase the clones. | Easy-medium |
| 5 | Deacons of the Deep | Cathedral of the Deep | 25–35 | Run to the back, kill the deep-sage NPC. The rest die in AOE. | Easy |
| 6 | Abyss Watchers | Farron Keep | 30–40 | The first real test. Dodge through left-to-right sweep. | Medium |
| 7 | High Lord Wolnir | Catacombs of Carthus | 35–45 | Hit the three wrist-bracelets. Avoid hand slams. | Easy |
| 8 | Old Demon King (optional) | Smouldering Lake | 40–50 | Hit his head when staggered. | Medium |
| 9 | Yhorm the Giant | Profaned Capital | 45–55 | Use Storm Ruler. Spam its special. | Easy |
| 10 | Pontiff Sulyvahn | Irithyll | 50–60 | The hardest so far. Dodge LEFT through his combos. | Hard |
| 11 | Aldrich, Devourer of Gods | Anor Londo | 55–65 | Strafe around him. Dodge arrow rain. Punish teleports. | Medium |
| 12 | Dancer (skip early!) | High Wall (return) | 60–70 | Do NOT fight before Pontiff. | Medium |
| 13 | Dragonslayer Armour | Lothric Castle | 65–75 | Stay close to his legs. Hit after halberd swing. | Medium |
| 14 | Oceiros, the Consumed King | Lothric Castle (lower) | 65–75 | Bait his charge, punish head-slam. | Medium |
| 15 | Champion Gundyr | Untended Graves | 75–85 | Iudex Gundyr with a full moveset. Parry him. | Hard |
| 16 | Lothric, Younger Prince (+ Prince Lothric) | Grand Archives | 80–90 | Two bosses. Kill the floating Prince first. | Hard |
| 17 | Soul of Cinder | Kiln of the First Flame | 85–100 | He copies every playstyle. Beat him however you beat Pontiff. | Hard |
The Dancer warning
When you return to the High Wall of Lothric after Pontiff, the Dancer boss fog appears. This is the intended trigger. Many guides tell you to fight her earlier as a “skip” — do not on your first run. She is tuned for a level-60+ character with several boss weapons. Going in at level 30 is the most common quit-cause.
After Soul of Cinder, the credits roll and both DLCs — Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City — become available. Both are short and difficult; recommended for a second playthrough.
8. NPCs and items you should not miss
NPC questlines give real items (Estus Shards, spells, weapons). Missing one step locks you out forever.
- Greirat (Undead Settlement → Firelink) — Sells rare items. Send him looting three times (after Pontiff, then to Irithyll Dungeon, then a final run). Rescue him from the Grand Archives roof or he dies.
- Siegward of Catarina (well at Cathedral → Irithyll → Yhorm) — Comedic onion knight. Fight Yhorm with him using Storm Ruler. After Yhorm, find him in Irithyll kitchen and give him a Siegbrau (brew at the Handmaid). He gives you a Titanite Slab.
- Anri / Horace the Hushed (Halfway Fortress → Smouldering Lake) — Co-op partners. Find Horace but do not kill his hollow form — Anri’s summon signs appear for Pontiff and Aldrich.
- Orbeck of Vinheim (Roadside in Road of Sacrifices) — Gives sorceries for any class. Bring three scrolls (Farron swamp, Crucifixion Woods, Irithyll). He leaves after three; give him only two if you want him to stay.
- Yoel of Londor (WARN) — Found near Foot of the High Wall bonfire. Offers to “draw out your true strength” with 5 free levels. Do not accept on a first run. Accepting gives a Dark Sigil that starts Hollowing and blocks an ending. If you want the “Usurpation of Fire” ending, kill Yoel on the High Wall — he respawns hostile and Yuria’s questline continues without the Sigil.
- Blacksmith Andre (Road of Sacrifices → Firelink) — All upgrades and infusions until end of game.
Common pitfall: killing important NPCs by accident. Almost no NPC needs to die. Read the name before swinging.
9. The 10 most common beginner mistakes
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Panic-rolling | Roll once, not three times. One good roll > three panic rolls |
| 2 | Holding shield permanently | Block only when you know the attack. Dodge the rest |
| 3 | Ignoring Vigor | Vigor to 27 by SL50, no exceptions |
| 4 | Spreading titanite across 4 weapons | Upgrade ONE weapon to +5/+10 before touching another |
| 5 | Over-leveling past SL120 | Stop at SL90–120 for co-op; meta soft-caps there |
| 6 | Running past enemies to the boss fog | Clear the area before the fog wall |
| 7 | Forgetting to talk to the Fire Keeper | Every shard / bone shard → Fire Keeper immediately |
| 8 | Killing important NPCs | Read the NPC name before swinging |
| 9 | Selling gear instead of using it | Souls → Firelink storage, not merchant |
| 10 | Fighting the Dancer early | Beat Pontiff FIRST, then return to the High Wall |
The biggest one is panic-rolling. A single well-timed roll beats three panicked rolls every time. Watch a boss’s first combo, identify the windup, then roll once through it. That’s the whole game.
10. Multiplayer notes for 2026
DS3 servers are still active in 2026.
| Mode | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Co-op (white/gold sign) | Drop White Sign Soapstone near a boss fog |
| Co-op password matching | Both set the same password in Network settings, then look for the Gold/White Sign |
| Invasions (red sign) | Drop a Red Eye Orb, or have a boss alive for auto-invasion |
| Blue covenant | Wear the Blue Eye Orb or covenant item |
| Off-line play | Boot the game in Steam offline mode |
PC server reliability note
The PC version has had several rough patches over the years with co-op and PvP servers going dark for hours. If you want zero online interruptions on PC, play offline. Offline still lets you summon NPCs and use boss-summon signs, just not other real players.
Console servers have historically been more stable than PC. If you have both, console is the safer pick for online play in 2026.
11. Where to go next
You are ready to start. A few reading suggestions for your first run:
- Diablo 4 Getting Started: Season 14, Server Pick, and the First 10 Hours — if you want to compare souls-like to ARPG pacing
- Path of Exile 2 Getting Started — if you like the build-crafting side of attribute points
- Subnautica 2 Beginner’s Walkthrough — for the chill couch game between boss runs
- Steam Deck Getting Started — Dark Souls 3 runs great on Steam Deck, capped 60fps with FSR
When you beat Soul of Cinder, come back for the DLC walkthrough (Ashes of Ariandel → The Ringed City) and the endgame boss-rush build guide. Until then: die, learn, retry, win.
Before you start: pick Knight. Take Fire Gem (or Life Ring if caster). Pump Vigor first. Upgrade ONE weapon. Learn the equip load % before swapping armor. Talk to every NPC you meet and remember their names. Above all: death is the teaching mechanic — when you die, read the recap, adjust, try once more. You've got this.
