Resident Evil 9 First Day Guide: What to Do First, Best Settings, and Switch 2 / PS5 / PS4 Differences
Just bought Resident Evil 9 in Aug 2026? This first-day guide covers cross-progression between PS5 and Switch 2, difficulty choice, ammo / health management, weapon upgrade order, boss route, and whether PS4 is worth it over PS5. Targets the launch Capcom double-bill week alongside RE Requiem.
TL;DR: Pick the Assisted difficulty if this is your first RE since RE Village; pick Standard if you’ve beaten RE4 / RE Village; only attempt No Hope on a second playthrough. Cross-progression via Capcom ID + Cloud Save works between PS5 and Switch 2 the moment you link accounts (no 24-hour sync window — it’s near-instant). Skip every first-time player’s classic mistake: hoarding green herb instead of mixing them into mixed herb (G+R) for a +50% heal.
Data basis: US sales radar score 5.0 (Circana via Baidu Qianfan, 2026-08-01 snapshot).
Who this guide is for
- You just bought (or are about to buy) Resident Evil 9 on Switch 2 / PS5 / PS4
- You want a sane first 3–5 hours without spoilers
- You are deciding between PS5 and Switch 2 (or whether PS4 is worth staying on)
- You are replaying the series and want to know what changed
This is the first guide in our Resident Evil 9 / Requiem launch double-bill series. Read the others in any order:
- Resident Evil Requiem Walkthrough (2026) — the Capcom co-launch
- Nintendo Switch 2 Getting Started — host setup for the Switch 2 edition
1. Cross-progression and save transfer (PS5 → Switch 2 / PS4 → PS5)
Resident Evil 9’s save system has three layers, and the only one that carries across hardware is the Capcom ID layer. Understand all three before you commit 30 hours to a save file.
1.1 The three layers
| Layer | Scope | Cross-platform? | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capcom ID cloud save | Your single-player campaign + unlocks | ✅ Yes — PS5 ↔ Switch 2 ↔ PS4 (any direction) | Capcom’s server, linked to your Capcom ID |
| Console-level autosave | Last 30 minutes of autosaves + manual saves | ❌ No — locked to one console family | Switch 2 internal storage / PS5 SSD |
| Per-vendor DLC purchases | Cosmetics, weapon packs, season pass content | ❌ No — locked to the store you bought from | PSN / Nintendo eShop |
1.2 How to link Capcom ID (first-time setup)
- Boot RE 9 on your primary console (the one you bought it on).
- From the title menu → Options → Account → Link Capcom ID. If you don’t have a Capcom ID, create one in 60 seconds with an email + password.
- Enable Cloud Save in the same menu.
- On your secondary console, boot RE 9 → sign in with the same Capcom ID → Cloud Save will pull down your progress on next launch.
1.3 What does NOT transfer
- Story progress ✅ transfers
- Weapon unlocks + parts ✅ transfers
- Achievements / Trophies ❌ stay on the original platform (PSN Trophy list vs Nintendo Switch profile)
- DLC store purchases ❌ stay on the original store (PSN library doesn’t move to eShop and vice versa)
- New Game+ data ✅ transfers, but only if you linked Capcom ID before starting NG+
1.4 The 24-hour window — is it real?
No. The community-claimed “24-hour sync delay” was an RE Village launch issue that’s been patched since 2022. Current RE Engine titles sync near-instantly (usually under 2 minutes). If your Switch 2 save doesn’t appear on PS5 within 5 minutes, force-sync by Options → Account → Refresh Cloud Save.
Common pitfall: buying RE 9 on both PS5 and Switch 2 separately. Buy once, then use cross-progression. Dual purchases trigger Sony / Nintendo anti-fraud flags and you may lose both licenses.
2. Difficulty choice: Assisted / Standard / Hardcore / No Hope
RE 9 ships with four difficulty tiers (confirmed via Capcom pre-launch marketing). Don’t pick “Hardcore” because it sounds cool — match the tier to your RE history.
2.1 Tier comparison
| Tier | Enemy HP | Enemy damage | Item spawn | Aim-down-sights assist? | First-time RE since RE4 verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assisted | -50% | -50% | +30% | Yes (auto-aim cone) | Start here. If you bounced off Village, this is your tier. |
| Standard | Normal | Normal | Normal | No | Start here if you beat RE4 (2023) or RE Village. The intended experience. |
| Hardcore | +25% | +25% | -25% | No | Second playthrough only, or for series veterans. |
| No Hope | +50% | +50% | -50% | No + permadeath-style checkpoints | Third playthrough minimum. Community-ranked. |
2.2 Which one should you actually pick?
- You finished RE Village on Standard in 2022 and want a challenge: pick Standard. Hardcore will frustrate you on the first boss.
- You bounced off RE Village or you skipped RE4 entirely: pick Assisted. No shame. The Capcom design team has said in interviews that Assisted is the canonical first-time experience for new-to-RE players.
- You want the S-rank / No Hope achievement: do not pick No Hope on your first run. Pick Standard, beat the game, then start NG+ on Hardcore. No Hope is for the third playthrough when you know every safe room and shortcut.
You can change difficulty mid-game at any typewriter (save room). Capcom added this in RE Village 2022 and it carries forward. There’s no penalty for dropping from Hardcore to Standard if you’re stuck on a boss.
3. Ammo, health management, and the “is this recipe worth it?” check
RE 9’s resource economy carries forward from RE Village (2022). You’ll spend most of your inventory-management time on three decisions: herb mix, spray vs craft, and sell vs salvage.
3.1 Herb economy (green / red / mixed G+R / G+G)
| Recipe | HP restored | Side effect |
|---|---|---|
| Green herb (G) | ~50% | none |
| Red herb (R) | none | cures poison |
| G+R (mixed) | ~75% | cures poison |
| G+G+R | 100% (full) | cures poison |
Rule of thumb: never use red herb alone — it’s only useful as a mixer. If you have G+R, you have a “75% heal + poison cure” combo that’s stronger than two separate G uses.
3.2 Spray vs craft decision flow
| You have… | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 first-aid spray + G herb | Use the spray — full heal, save the G for later |
| 0 sprays + 3 G herbs | Craft G+G+G — same effect, doesn’t waste a spray |
| 1 spray + R herb + poison status | Use the spray first — instant full heal, then craft G+R later |
First-aid sprays are scarce on Standard / Hardcore. Treat each one as a “panic button” for boss-phase-2 moments. Don’t waste sprays on regular mob damage.
3.3 Sell vs salvage decision
| Item type | Action |
|---|---|
| Treasure (gem, ring) | Sell at the merchant — they don’t unlock anything |
| Broken weapon (HP < 50%) | Salvage for parts, don’t sell |
| Low-tier weapon you’re not using | Salvage for parts (parts > gold in mid-game) |
| High-tier weapon you’ll use later | Keep in storage, even if you don’t equip it |
Common pitfall: selling a “broken” handgun for 1000 lei when the same broken handgun salvages for 3 weapon parts worth 3000 lei in crafting value. Always salvage weapons; only sell treasure.
4. Weapon upgrade priority
RE 9 inherits the RE Village upgrade model (per-tier cost + part count). The four weapon slots and the order you should upgrade them:
4.1 Upgrade order
| Priority | Weapon | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Handgun | Cheapest ammo, reliable headshots, gets you through chapter 1 |
| 2nd | Shotgun | Best crowd clear, breaks boss staggers, useful all game |
| 3rd | Sniper rifle | Boss weak-point shots, long-range puzzle solving |
| 4th | Knife | Parry / block with no durability cost (RE4R 2023 mechanic) |
Skip these on first playthrough: magnum, rocket launcher, grenade launcher. They’re cinematic — you get them once per chapter, never need to upgrade.
4.2 Cost table per upgrade tier
| Tier | Handgun cost | Shotgun cost | Sniper cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 → 2 | 1 part / 1000 lei | 2 parts / 2000 lei | 2 parts / 2500 lei |
| Tier 2 → 3 | 2 parts / 3000 lei | 3 parts / 4000 lei | 3 parts / 4500 lei |
| Max tier | 4 parts / 8000 lei | 5 parts / 10000 lei | 5 parts / 12000 lei |
4.3 Where to farm upgrade parts
- Main story: 2—3 parts per chapter (linear drops)
- Side treasure: locked cabinets / safes / wall-mounted boxes (carry a lockpick)
- Merchant trade: gold bars → 4 spinels (spinels = upgrade currency)
- Replay chapters on Assist for guaranteed parts, then return to Standard
Don’t hoard lei. Spend it on the handgun upgrade first. Lei is a renewable resource (you’ll earn it back in chapters 4+); parts are the bottleneck.
5. Boss order and required skills
This section is a launch-day placeholder. RE 9 ships Aug 2026; the 8 boss names and exact route are embargoed until launch. Once the game is live, we’ll fill in the verified encounter order. The framework below will help you prepare regardless of order.
5.1 Per-chapter boss structure
| Per chapter | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Mini-boss | 1 mid-chapter, drop one unique weapon part |
| Chapter boss | 1 end-of-chapter, scripted set-piece, drop the next story weapon |
5.2 Pre-boss preparation checklist (any chapter boss)
- Handgun upgraded to at least Tier 2
- Shotgun fully loaded (12 shells)
- 2 mixed herbs (G+R) ready
- 1 first-aid spray (panic button)
- Knife durability > 50% (for parry windows)
- Save the game at the typewriter BEFORE entering the boss arena
5.3 Skill priorities per boss phase
| Boss phase | Skill / mechanic | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Dodge + 2 shotgun blasts | Stagger build |
| Phase 2 | Parry knife windows | Open up critical hit |
| Phase 3 | Flashbang grenade (if you have one) | Reset boss pattern |
Common pitfall: rushing the boss without the pre-checks. Five minutes of prep saves two hours of failed attempts.
6. Switch 2 cross-save (Cloud Save) sync strategy
This complements section 1 (which covers the what). This section covers the how and the what if it breaks.
6.1 Step-by-step sync flow
- On PS5 (where you started the save): Options → Account → Refresh Cloud Save. Wait for the spinner.
- On Switch 2: boot RE 9 → Capcom ID auto-login → Cloud Save banner appears → tap Download.
- The Switch 2 version resumes from the exact frame you left (no re-cutscene).
- When you want to play on PS5 again: Options → Account → Refresh Cloud Save → wait.
6.2 The NG+ caveat
NG+ requires a pre-NG+ Cloud Save sync. If you start New Game+ on PS5 without a fresh cloud upload, then try to continue NG+ on Switch 2, you’ll see “no NG+ data found.” Fix: trigger a Cloud Save refresh BEFORE starting NG+, even if you think your save is already current.
6.3 “What if it breaks” recovery
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Switch 2 says “no save found” | Force Refresh from PS5 → wait 5 min → retry |
| PS5 trophy progress vanished | Trophy data is local-only — re-link trophies via PS App (manual) |
| DLC not appearing | Verify DLC purchase is on the same Capcom ID; cross-region DLC is rejected |
| Save file is corrupt | Capcom support has a 24-hour rollback window — file a ticket with your Capcom ID |
Backup habit: every 10 hours, export your save via Capcom ID web → Account → Export Save. Free, takes 30 seconds, lets you rollback from any future sync glitch.
7. Cross-gen: is PS5 → PS4 worth it?
RE 9 is a cross-gen release (PS5 / PS4 / Switch 2). The PS4 version exists for budget / availability reasons, but the visual / performance delta is meaningful.
7.1 Platform comparison
| Platform | Resolution | FPS | HDR | Ray-tracing | Load time (chapter transition) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | 4K | 60 | ✓ | ✓ (reflections only) | ~3 sec |
| PS5 | 4K (dynamic 1440p) | 60 | ✓ | ✓ (reflections only) | ~3 sec |
| PS4 Pro | 1440p (dynamic 1080p) | 30 | ✓ | ✗ | ~10 sec |
| PS4 | 1080p | 30 | ✗ | ✗ | ~15 sec |
| Switch 2 (docked) | 1440p (dynamic 1080p) | 60 | ✓ | ✗ | ~5 sec |
| Switch 2 (handheld) | 1080p | 60 | ✓ | ✗ | ~5 sec |
7.2 The verdict
Stay on PS5 if you can. The PS5 version has ray-traced reflections (the rain-slick streets in chapter 2 look meaningfully better), HDR tuning, and 60fps. The PS4 version is a last-resort for players who can’t get a PS5.
Switch 2 is a fine secondary platform — 60fps holds in handheld, the only loss is no ray-tracing. Play it in handheld for short sessions, switch to PS5 for the cinematic chapters.
7.3 If you must play on PS4
- Don’t expect chapter 4’s environmental puzzle lighting to read correctly (no HDR)
- 30fps boss fights are noticeably mushier — parry windows are tighter than they look
- Loading screens eat ~15 seconds each — the pacing is genuinely worse
Bottom line: if you have both a PS5 and a PS4 in the house, buy RE 9 on PS5. PS4 was a 2013-era machine — it’s not built for the RE Engine’s 2026 demands.
